(EDIT: Actual name of item listed in C.P. Add/Remove Programs is "Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistrbutible - x86 9.0.30729.6161", and is 10.20 MB.)

I know that Windows Vista was given some Visual C++ type update several months ago, I believe more than once; but I could not remember this also being given as Windows Updates on Windows XP (service pack 3). In the last few days, I found some listing in Windows XP Add/Remove of Control Panel for some Windows/Microsoft VC++ or Visual C++ ... something. (I am using a different machine right now, so is hard to check exact name). I never remember seeing that item listed in the XP machine before.

The question is, does Windows XP or XP at service pack 3 NORMALLY have this Visual C++ ... stuff, or is this something that only appeared within the last few hours/days? The Add/Remove listing does NOT show any install dates. I do NOT have any C++ compiler on the machine and never did; this VC++ or Visual C++ would be possibly for the use of some other kinds of program (maybe related to my recent installation problems with portable Libre Office).

Anyway, I believe I wish to uninstall this VC++/Visual C++ item from the XP machine. Would this hurt anything? Does anyone know what/which program use this item? Is this an important part of Windows XP, or just an update in case the user has some certain applications installed which would require this Windows Update?

Visual C updates, as well as others, are applicable across every version of Windows.

If it's installed, I suggest leaving it alone...along with any other Microsoft updates which you may deem undesireable. They serve a purpose, IMO.
