Hello everyone,
I am having an issue with one update.
Microsoft Security Essentials Client Update Package - KB2754296
The first time it came up I, as usual, allowed it to be installed on powering down my computer.
When I logged back on the next day it was back, I tried to manually install it and the following came up.

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package
'epp.msi' in the box below.

The options I have both come up "not found" and the installation fails.

This particular update seems to be a common problem on the Microsof forums and I did try some of their
suggestions. Going through the Microsoft forums advice I have...
-tried manual installation (doing this temporarily turns off MSE and causes the Security Center to not
be able to find MSE on the computer.) After the update fails MSE turns back on, no harm no foul.
-used the Microsoft "fix it" update tool
-updated Internet Explorer 8 (this did fix a browser issue I was having)
-updated Java and Adobe
-uninstalling and re-installing MSE (I am currently unable to do this, when I try I get a similiar issue,
the path or proper folder is not available ect.) MSE is working fully, updates properly, and scans properly
as far as I can tell.

I would label this a low priority issue, I have no issues to suggest this is a virus, it is just
one of those little annoying things that come up from time to time. I thought I would check here
first before submitting a help ticket on the Microsoft forums.

Windows XP, SP3, Pro 32, I have MSE as anti-virus and Windows Firewall. If I am leaving off any
other important information please let me know.

Thanks for your time and effort.

Alexander W.

Hello - Please try it this way -
First close or save any open documents, as this will need a reboot when finished -

Microsoft Security Essentials Update - September 2012
Microsoft has released an update for Microsoft Security Essentials which offers performance enhancements and some new functionality within the program.

To receive this update, follow these steps:

1.Open Microsoft Security Essentials.
2.Click the down arrow located to the right of Help.
3.Click Check for software updates. A Windows Update window will appear.
4.Click Install updates.
5.If prompted, click Restart now. Your computer will restart and the update will install.

Let us know how it went - Thanks -

Quick Edit -
KB2754296 - As I run MSE as my antivirus I just rechecked in my updates - This is there (installed)

Hello Nokojon, thank you for your reply.

I followed your instructions and the same thing happened.
The update was found and initializing installation done, but when
it tried to install the previous message popped up.

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the
installation package 'epp.msi' in the box below.

In the box below I have two options...
C:\7d4ce7378c98eec1ed769aada022\x86\
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\Backup\

Both options lead back to the same issue, not found ect.

On the Microsoft Update History Page other updates on a daily basis were downloaded
and updated properly, either through automatic updates or manually updating.
Its just this one that won't seem to take. This particular update tried to install the
first time over a week ago and failed, then I tried manually and failed, ect. It
is always there when I power down so I click to power down and automatically update ect.

It may be of note that the update is always in my bottom right icon tray.
I am on a laptop with a bad wireless connection so when I need to get online
I must use a wired connection. When I turn on my laptop and I am not connected
to the internet the update shield still pops up in the icon tray.

Weird huh?

Hi -
First make sure that you have good internet connection -

You could list the Make and Model of computer and post a snapshot with Speccy as this may give us a bit more to look at -
Publish a Snapshot using Speccy <<Follow These Directions

Please download MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following boxes:

•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
List devices (Problem only)
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and copy / paste the result (Result.txt).

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Thank You -

Hi -
You may need to uninstall and reinstall MSE, this should install the current version - Information, or uninstall / Fixit Tool listed below >>
Uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials > Info > Tool
Reinstall a new version from this link > http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=231274
Latest 32bit updates from >> http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=121721&arch=x86

Memory Type: DDR Size: 512 MBytes < You could also look at installing a bit more memory as it shows Memory Usage: 78 % Total Physical: 511 MB Available Physical: 111 MB
So you will be reaching your running limit if you try to play intensive games, or download more music, etc.
No other major problems show up yet, but I am just adding this as it needs to be shown -
My XP Pro currently runs 4G RAM memory and has no problems like my last one that was also Half a Gig like yours -

Thanks -

Hello again Noknojon,

I was able to get the latest updates and uninstall MSE, the update seems to have
taken hold, however, now I am unable to re-install MSE. I get the same "Windows Installer"
pop up.

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation
package 'epp.msi' in the box below.

Both options in the box below come back "not valid path or not found" ect.

I ran the Microsoft Fix It Tool.
I tried to update/re-download the Windows Installer (3.1 I think) with no luck.
I am going to try again and reboot to see if that was what was needed. I will pop back in
shortly.

As far as the memory is concerned you are absolutely right. I've been putting it off with
the idea I would just upgrade to a new computer in the near future. I currently just use this
computer for Microsoft Word, YouTube, and iTunes. I wouldn't even dare trying to play a game
on this machine heh.

Thanks for your help, ill check back on later.

After rebooting I get a pop up from Microsoft Security Client.

It states "An error has occurred in the program during initialization.
If this problem continues, please contact your system administrator.
Error Code: 0x80070002

After going through the Microsoft Fix It Tool a few more times it
has solved several errors but then when I try to install Microsoft
Security Essentials I get a different one.

During MSE download and install I get the error code...
Error Code: 0x80070645

It does allow me to download Windows Defender, is this just a different
version of Microsoft Security Essentials?

Windows Defender is included as a part of MSE but is not the prgram you are looking for
Can you try to download MSE and Save to Desktop or Save to Documents, rather than doing a direct install ??
Next look in Control Panel > Add /Remove and make sure that you have .NET Framework 3.5 installed -
This is very important for installing MSE and many other programs today (updates included).

First save / Close all open programs - Now Go - Start > RunBoc and Copy / Paste this following code into the box
CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /F | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30
Click OK or hit Enter and the code will reboot your computer and then start a 30 second countdown to do a DiskCheck -
This will run for about 1 hour (on average) for all 5 stages and then reboot back to normal mode -

Thanks -

I was able to download MSE and save with no problem (as far as I can tell).

I did find "Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1" in program download list.

I ran the check disk although it only took about 5 minutes. I thought it only ran
four stages, something happened at the end but quickly rebooted.
Did I miss something, you wanted me too post the code into the run box correct?
Start > Run > then just copy and paste, OK. What is RunBoc? Same thing correct?

I tried to install MSE from the file and online from the Microsoft Website and got
the same pop up. The 'epp.msi' file/folder not found/not valid path ect.

Was a report generated from the check disk, if so I did not notice one or do not know where
to look for it/name ect. Thank you.
