Dell Desktop Inspiron 530
Windows Vista Home Premium SP 2
Running avast! AV, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and SUPERAntiSpyware with latest definitions

Hello,

This computer seems to be showing some signs of infection. If not major, I would think at least minor. The computer was slowing down a bit in general usage a few weeks ago but didn't think much of it at the time. Then, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox wouldn't open about 80% of the time after computer is booted up. The programs are running when looking at the processes in task manager but no windows open up. Internet Explorer is able to open though. Then, some toolbars like Incredibar were showing up when browsers did open. Now, computer sometimes locks up and freezes without any error messages showing. Have to resort to hard reset. Sometimes computer would freeze during start up also and would require rebooting a few more times.

I have tried booting up in safe mode and that works fine. Google Chrome and Firefox are able to open normally when in safe mode also.

Thank you for reading and helping!

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

====================================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

I don't see much so far.

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Next...

  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Uninstall.
  • Confirm with yes.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
    NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

Broni,

I'm so sorry...I think I messed up. TFC ran fine and removed a bunch of temp files. I ran AdwCleaner and it removed a bunch of Incredibar entries (which I was so glad since the program is incredibly annoying). After looking at the log, I went ahead and uninstalled AdwCleaner, thinking it would leave the log in my C drive. However, after uninstalling, the log seems to have been deleted too. I can't find it in the folder or anywhere else including the recycle bin. As for ESET, happy to report that no threats were found so no log generated.

I'm thinking maybe I'm being overly paranoid and the computer is not infected then? If so, I apologize for the thread but still very much appreciate the help. If anything, I have more peace of mind now.

Apologies for the late reply. After ESET finished, it said no threats found so I didn't see any log to post....

As for any changes to the computer, I'm still having a hard time getting Firefox or Chrome to open without restarting multiple times. Not sure how that problem ties in.

Uninstall Firefox completely using this manual: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
Install fresh copy.

UNinstall Chrome....
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Google Chrome > Uninstall Google Chrome.
  • Delete your user profile information, like your browser preferences, bookmarks, and history, by selecting the "Also delete browser data" checkbox.
  • Select the default browser you'd like to use.
  • Click OK in the confirmation prompt.
  • The uninstall process will begin.
Install fresh copy.

I completely removed both programs (profiles, settings, everything..) but once reinstalled, they're still exhibiting the same problem. I hope reformatting isn't the only other option... :(

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
