I have a Brother MFC-8500. It's a great machine; about 10 years old. A new printer/scanner is not in the budget. Is there any way I can scan on this machine and get a PDF? Do I have to purchase Adobe? I hope not that's not cheap either. Thanks for any assistance.

Might wanna try primo pdf...

It's a free print to pdf resource. I'm assuming your scanner scans to word, or uses some sort of OCR software.
I think computer viruses should count as life. I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive. We've created life in our own image. ~Stephen Hawking
