There are two ways to disable Windows Live Messenger.

1) Go to Start> Control Panel> Administrator Tools> Services. In Services scroll down to Messenger and right click on it. A menu will open, click on Properties. In Properties go to Startup type:, press the down arrow and click on the option Disable.

2) Sign on to Windows Live Messenger, click the down arrow and select Options. Choose the General tab and remove the check in the box beside "Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log on to Windows' and then Accept.
