SP2 and some other updates fail to load Vista Home Premium

Helping a friend clean up and repair a Gateway laptop. Finally got internet web pages to load (ran Norton removal program) and resolved some other issues using Registry Repair. However, nothing seems to be working to allow ServicePack2 to load (followed some MS suggestions), and there is at least one .NET update for SP1 that loads but won't configure correctly, so OS reverts to previous configuration.

Run it in aggressive mode

Download

Windows repair tool

Extract and launch the Repair_Windows.exe file

Click on Start repairs tab-click on Start

check mark following options alone

Reset registry permissions
reset file permissions
Remove Policies Set By Infections
Repair Winsock & DNS Cache


Checkmark Restart System When Finished option
click the Start button

System should restart after repair

Now see if you are able to update.

Thanks kindly for your help. Below is the scan log from FSS. I followed the other instructions. Looked like problems were found/fixed?, but still no luck with updating (see the note immediately below from Windows Update). I didn't try to load SP2.

I hope this is it. Was really slow when Windows Update installed a Hotfix, so I stopped the installation and re-started. File is called
CheckSUR.persist in the location you cited.

Checkmark all the updates except .net framework for SP1 and try updating.Let me know if that worked.

When I check for updates the .net framework for SP1 is the only important update that shows up. I haven't tried to update the less important ones lately, but they were updating before. I tried the .net framework for SP1 again. Still failed.

Thanks again for your help. Downloaded as specified, was asked to repair or remove .net framework sp1. I chose remove. Ran download again which installed .net framework sp1. Restarted and ran updates. Said update was installed, but on re-start, configuration was not successful so it automatically reverted. Any other suggestions?

Open command prompt as administrator and run these commands one by one


net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
net stop wuauserv
ren catroot2 catroot2.old
cd c:\windows
ren softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.old

Restart the PC and try to update.If you still have issues run system readiness tool again and post the CHECKSUR log as instructed before.

Extract it and copy both the files to this folder

C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

Create this folder if it doesnt exist

Run system readiness tool and post the new checksur log
