A little background....

I can't open any word documents. When I do open word and try to close it a window comes up saying "the file normal already exists, do you want to replace it?". I desperately need to be able to open my word docs.

Thanks again....

Fix these entries in hjt:

O16 - DPF: {A5DC33CE-214B-4C26-8596-8A45456C9EB8} - http://activex.microsoft.com/objects/ocget.dll
O16 - DPF: {AA218328-0EA8-4D70-8972-E987A9190FF4} - http://activex.microsoft.com/objects/ocget.dll

O16 - DPF: {58916BE6-BAFF-4F33-AEFE-B2AA03FE4C86} - http://activex.microsoft.com/objects/ocget.dll

Then reboot and do the following:

Perform an onlinescan with Panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a few minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report together a fresh HijackThis log

Make sure word is closed and then do a search for normal.dot on your computer. Delete any that you find.

Reboot and try word...does it work now?

Still have the problem after deleting all normal.dot. And, it comes back after restarting word.

Try the steps here and disable the norton office plugin and see if that helps:

The first time that I tried this I had to completely remove Norton. When it was removed I was able to open my word documents. When I reinstalled Norton and ran the update again I have an error message that "subscription client update" did not load. But at least now I am able to disable office plugins and open word docs. Any suggestions on why "subscription client update" won't load? And, should I go ahead and remove the virus that I know I have?

Thanks for your help so far!

Yes remove any viruses that you know you have on your computer. Is that the exact error message you get when you try updating?

I assumed that I had the w32/netsk.s virus but when I ran the fix from symanted it did not find it....

Virus:W32/Netsky.S.worm Not disinfected Personal Folders\Inbox\Your information\order1.pif

The error code that I get is LU1806. I cannot click on the "click this for more information on this error". When I do a search of Symantec that is what it tells me to do after first rebooting (which I did).

Yeah I would reinstall norton and see if that fixes the update problem. The email it found is probably one it found in your outlook .pst file (personal folders). So it was not able to delete it.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton for the second time. Now I get two error messages when I run live update:

LU1812: A program that was part of this update failed when it ran. This update was not applied.

Installation failed, error summary...
LU1806: LiveUpdate downloaded all of the updates you requested, but all of them failed to install. Please try to get the updates at a later time.

I updated "Live Update" because it said I had an outdated version of it. I also made sure that Zone Alarm was configured correctly and even disabled it. But I still get these error messages...

FRUSTRATING....

Your best bet is to give symantec a ring I think. I am unsure as to how to fix this.
