software to suspend external HDD on-the-fly?

as mentioned above, I'd like to find a software that could help me 'turn off' my external HDD (by user intervention, not after X mins of idling) completely, instead of spinning @ idle speed when connected through my usb3 port. is that possible? i want to keep my hdd connected physically 24/7, but want to preserve its lifespan by controlling via software when it should start running.

Revosleep perhaps? I've never needed to do this, so I can't vouch for the software - never used it.
