We have a Dell Windows 7 desktop. We have that hooked up to our internet and router/modem (when the guy from our ISP installed it he said it was both in one). It's a Westell modem/router. Our laptop gets wireless from the router. The router is in the floor next to the desktop and the laptop is across the room. Our internet is DSL.

Lately we've been having annoying little problems with the wireless not working on the laptop. I use the laptop at my Grandma's with her wireless and never have any trouble, so that makes me think it's the desktop causing the problem.

Sometimes the internet stops working on the laptop (which is an HP Windows 7). It'll just say no internet access. Somehow it gets fixed every time, usually after I spend a half-hour unplugging the router and plugging it back and then running troubleshoots on the laptop (the desktop never can find anything wrong, so it has nothing to troubleshoot). When I run troubleshoot on the laptop it says that the wireless network has a problem with the IP configuration. Eventually it gets working again. How I don't know. It seems like turning the modem off and on does not help so I actually unplug the power and the other cords in it and let it sit a minute or two. Then I plug it back and turn it back on and wait. Eventually, a few minutes later it's working again, but I'm not sure exactly how it gets fixed.

I have noticed that the wireless light on the router is almost never solid, even when it is working.

Then the past couple of nights the internet stops working on the desktop first. Both times it said "unidentified network," rather than "network 4," which is what it is usually called. I turn the modem off and on and that seems to fix it.

I've read online that the router sometimes just loses its IP configuration and has to find it again, but lately it's been happening several times a week. Is that normal?

I can call my ISP if I need to, but I was wondering if there's some simple solution I'm overlooking.

The model of the modem/router is A90-750022-07. It also says "Rev: E" and "Made in China 7/2011." There's other numbers on back, like the SN, WPA, and MAC, but I wasn't sure if you needed those.

Thanks,

God Bless.

Here's the results of the report. Since I use Firefox I told it to report the FF settings as well as the IE settings.

I have noticed that the wireless light on the router is almost never solid, even when it is working

That is normal for the wifi led light, however if connections is cut out on both computers and have a no internet network message, its definitely between your modem/router or ISP.

My ISP was out on the street today fixing something on the poles. So maybe they've fixed it.

My advise to you would be to exchange it for a basic modem and get your own linksys router. The ISP issues router/modem combos are garbage.

Disable the master browsing service on the laptop. Go to the start menu and select the run command. Type services.msc and press enter. Search for the master browser service and change the start up type to disable. This should stop the computers from fighting over network control.

The router is in the floor next to the desktop

Do you mean on the floor ? If so i would try to get it up on a table anything but the floor. Bad repception for sure.
