Hello, I have a problem with my computer that popped up out of nowhere a while ago. It started with a chkdsk that happened randomly, but I didn't think too much of it at the time because my computer seemed to work perfectly fine after the whole process was done. Then a few months after the chkdsk happened, I suddenly noticed my computer acting a little weird. Out of the blue, my computer started to hang while I was doing what I usually do on my PC such as surfing the web, etc. I restarted my computer to see if the problem would disappear and ran into a problem with the bootup. It was very slow because of this long annoying black screen that appeared for about a minute after the windows logo and before the login screen. I had then logged in and things were loading up very slowly, but after everything loaded my computer ran fine. I rebooted my computer once again and another chkdsk popped up; it did whatever it did and my PC seemed to had gone back to normal. Everything booted up at normal speed and all was fine until about 5 days later when the same problems came back to slap me in the face. This cycle would repeat itself for several weeks until it just suddenly decided to get worse. These problems started to happen daily instead of every 5 days or so. Not only were they happening every day, they were more severe. Opening up a program like Steam would take about 30 minutes and it would lag my whole computer (except my mouse) until it finally opens up the program's login screen -- and it wasn't even functioning properly when it finally opened. Also, Chrome and Firefox won't even open at times, but Internet Explorer works. I see Chrome/Firefox in the processes tab of the task manager, but the browser never opens. The only time the browsers seem to work properly-ish is when I start the computer for the first time after shutting it down for a good few hours. My PC also seems to function a little bit better including booting up a bit faster after leaving it off overnight.

There are several random problems, including my control panel opening up blank with no icons or some other programs not working properly at all. For example, AIM instant messenger freezes and while it acts up, it lags my whole internet on my computer only until I close it down through the task manager. It seems like my video games work fine though; I've only checked a few, but they seem to open up perfectly fine and function at 100%. Though, after exiting a game called League of Legends, my computer would start acting up and the long boot times would occur after I reboot. This was a while back though, before the problems were this severe and daily.

I've searched for possible solutions throughout the web without much success. I tried a diagnostic startup and tried to single out what service was causing this, but not coming up with much. A diagnostic startup seemed to make the boot time slightly faster, but the long black screen was still there, just 10-20 seconds shorter. There was also this ONE unique time where windows explorer crashed on startup due to wdmaud.drv or some crap that I can't clearly remember; this has not happened again though.

Hopefully, I was specific enough in decribing my problems and any help is much appreciated.

IMO...

When chkdsk starts on its own...that's a sure sign that the user needs to run the complete chkdsk /r routine.

The autostart chkdsk is a 3-stage process, while chkdsk /r is a 5-stage process. The chkdsk which runs automatically has become aware of problems...but the fact that it is not as complete as a 5-stage chkdsk /r means that it may not address the detected problems fully.

Thanks very much for this. Seems like chkdsk /r fixed many of the problems I was having. The black screen screen that appears during boot up seems to be getting shorter and shorter and my desktop loads normally now. There are still some weird things that still linger and my PC doesn't feel 100% like it's old self, but it is much better than before. Unfortunately, I am now getting BSOD's -- so far I've gotten 2 while just surfing the web on Chrome. I'm not sure whats causing them and I'm not sure how to check whats causing them. Hopefully they don't appear anymore, but I have a feeling this is going to be a pain in the butt.

Let's see...what we can see :). This will be a 3-stage operation.

1. Download/install BlueScreenView, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html .

Double-click BlueScreenView.exe file.

When autoscan is done (screen comes up), click Edit/Select All...then File/Save Selected Items.

Save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content and paste it into your next reply.

2. Please download MiniToolBox , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

3. Follow the directions to Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 .

Once again, still some problems that linger on my computer along with the BSOD. It's not as severe as before, but still not at 100%. I haven't gotten a bsod since the last 3 I had a couple days ago; the third one came right after my last post. I'm not really stressing my computer out though.

I'm unable to post the bluescreenview content because I can't figure out how to save it as a txt file. It didn't give me any options when I did File/Save Selected Items. It acted like it did something, but I don't know where it saves to.

I guess that I would go back to my previous target...the hard drive...and run the appropriate diagnostic on it.

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=605&sid=30&lang=en is the version designed for use via CD. The long test is what I would run (more thorough).

Sorry for the late reply.

I did the test and it said "too many errors found". Error/status code = 0225

Doesn't sound very nice.

"225 Too Many Errors Found Error count reached a threshold value. There are too many errors detected on this drive to be repaired. Replace the drive."

Per http://support.wdc.com/techinfo/general/errorcodes.asp .
