Hi. Around midnight, I think, on the 19th, my computer began acting odd, my webcam flashed, and the fake FBI Moneypak virus payscreen took over. It happened to my laptop, a Dell Inspiron N5110, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I'm currently on a different computer typing everything.

Yesterday, I got a lot of help in this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic469156.html
It contains logs from programs I was asked to use in that thread. I scanned my PC with Malwarebytes, which found things a few times, all of which were the same files, in a folder named "hellomoto". I deleted suspicious files, I ran HitmanPro a couple times which only found some tracking cookies and keygens. I thought of doing a system restore to solve everything, but I somehow have no restore points. I scanned with the various things that I was asked to scan with in that thread (ESET online scanner, TSSkiller, Autoruns, aswMBR), and some of them found and eliminated some things in their scans. I'm currently unsure whether or not I still have the Moneypak virus, though, because when trying to go into normal mode on my computer to do scans in there, I am greeted with a blue screen saying REGISTRY_ERROR. Here's a crash report:

All in all, I was told to do scans and make a thread here, so here I am. I'm on 64bit, so I did NOT do a scan with GMER, as per the preparation thread. Here's my log from DDS:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/469373 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you should not bother creating a GMER log.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

The updated post after HelpBot's post: my issue is still the same as I explained in my original post. I had, or perhaps still have, from what I know, the FBI Moneypak virus. I scanned with Malwarebytes a couple times, as well as HitmanPro, one of which found files in a folder named "hellomoto" a couple times (MBAM), the other just found some cookies and keygens (Hitman). I manually deleted a couple things that were suspicious. I used guides to see if I could fix any other issues but most if not all were all for Windows Vista, and I run 7. I scanned with ESET online scanner, TSSkiller, Autoruns, and aswMBR as requested in my original thread (located here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic469156.html), some of which found and eliminated some files it deemed threats. I was asked to go into normal mode to run a MBAM scan, but was unable, because every time I enter normal mode on the infected computer, I'm greeted with a blue screen saying REGISTRY_ERROR. Here's a BSOD crash report, a newer one than the one in my OP:

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:	BlueScreen

Everything is happening on my laptop. It's a Dell Inspiron N5110, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I'm currently on a different computer typing everything.

Here's my new DDS log, as requested by the HelpBot post. Did not run a GMER log, as I am running 64bit. Thanks for the help thus far, I'll continue waiting patiently for help. I really do greatly appreciate everything.

Hello funko-branco,

My name is Cody and I'll be helping you clean up your computer.

I will reply as soon as possible (typically within 24 hours). In turn, I ask that you please respond within 72 hours. If you know you will be away longer than that, I just ask for notice ahead of time.

Some points for you to keep in mind:

  • Do NOT run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • It's simply easier for me to analyze logs in this format.
  • Provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • Every post you make, please describe in detail how the computer is behaving. "The same" is not detailed enough. If you have any questions at any point, feel free to ask.

NOTE: When you post your reply, do not use the Posted Image button but use the Posted Image button instead.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the Posted Image button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planned. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

Hi, Cody. Thanks for the response and thanks in advance for the help.
Sorry about the code boxes, if you'd like for me to repost the logs I've already posted outside of boxes, I'd be glad to. I'll be aware not to use them during this process.
Hopefully we can work everything out with my computer! Again, thanks in advance, and I'll be waiting patiently as possible for any instructions.

Hello funko-branco,

Are you still getting BSODs every time you enter Windows normally? If so, follow the directions below.

Please download and install Bluescreenview HERE.

In your next post, please include the information given about the latest BSOD so we can determine what is causing the issue.

I am, yeah. I tried entering normal mode before running the program to check, too. Here's the info from that crash. I hope it's the correct info, if it's not, let me know what the correct info you need from bluescreenview is.

Hello funko-branco,

We're going to try using a Hotfix from Microsoft located HERE.

Click the "HotFix Download Available ->" button.

Click "Accept" if you agree to the terms and conditions.

Enter your email information along with the captcha, and click "Request hotfix."

You will receive an email in which the Hotfix will be included. Download and install this.

I downloaded the hotfix and extracted the zip it sent me. When I tried the EXE to install the hotfix, it gave me a setup error saying "This Q810558 is for a different hardware platform."
The only options for hotfixes on the site said "Windows 2000" as the Product, and the platform for the English one, which I downloaded, was "i386", and the fix name was "PKG37700".
When I get to the page with the hotfixes, it shows my platform and language, and no options for the x64 platform. I can go to "Show hotfixes for all platforms and languages", though, which is where I chose the hotfix to download.

Should there be other options I'm not seeing on my laptop? I'm doing everything in safe mode, of course, since normal mode won't work without BSOD, and the exe seems like it won't work correctly.

Hello funko-branco,

Since we're having some trouble with that Hotfix, we're going to come at this from a different angle. We might come back to the Hotfix later though.

------------------------------------

Use the Windows Error Checking utility (Check Disk), with the options to fix file system errors and scan the disk surface for errors, attempt recovery of data and repair the disk:

  • Click the "Windows Orb" Start button, then click Computer.
  • Right-click on the drive that you wish to check > Properties > Tools tab
  • In the "Error checking" section, click on Check now.
  • Place a checkmark in both boxes > Start.
  • If the disk you have chosen is the Windows system disk:
  • A message will notify you that a restart is necessary ask "Do you want to check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer?".
  • Click Schedule disk check > OK and close all windows.
  • Re-start the computer. The disk will be checked when the system boots.
  • This will take some time to run and at times may appear stalled but just let it run.
  • When the disk check is complete, the system will re-start automatically and load Windows.

A log of the disk check is recorded only if the scheduled re-start is used, and only for drives on the same HDD as the Operating System.
To open Event Viewer and view the log:

  • Click the "Windows Orb" Start button -> type "eventvwr" without the quotes -> press the <ENTER> key.
  • The Event Viewer window will open.
  • In the left pane, expand "Windows Logs" and then click on Application.
  • In the right pane, at the top, click on the column heading Source to sort the list alphabetically.
  • Look in the Source column for "Wininit", with an entry corresponding to the date and time of the disk check.
  • Click on that Wininit entry to select it.
  • On the top main menu, click Action > Copy > Copy Details as Text.
  • Paste the contents into your next reply.

Hello funko-branco,

Open Memory Diagnostics Tool by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel.

In the search box type Memory, and then click "Diagnose your computer's memory problems.‌"

If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Click "Restart Now and Check For Problems."

Please include the results of this in your next post.

I just ran that twice, and one time was sent to normal mode where I was, of course, met with the BSOD before the results could be displayed. Second time, I restarted when it got to the normal mode login, and got into safe mode, and no results were shown. Are the results logged anywhere on the computer that I can find and then post here?

Hello funko-branco,

Did you actually see the test being done? The application running?

Yeah. The computer booted, the Memory Diagnostics Tool screen came up, and I watched the test run. Just ran it again and it did the test, finished, and went to the "Starting Windows" screen bringing me to the normal mode login screen, so I rebooted, entered safe mode with networking, and no results. Do they get logged? I can pull them out and post them that way if they do.
