In the last week or so my computer has been running intermittently slow. Right now it seems to be operating ok, but 5 minutes ago it wouldn't open anything and even still it sometimes will take 4-5 minutes to open a window and actually let anything run. I downloaded speccy and here is what it gave me...what should I do next? Thanks everyone.

Hi -
2 quick things I noticed - Your Temperatures are just a bit high
Motherboard
Dell Inc. 0R387D (Microprocessor): 54 °C
CPU
Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T7250 @ 2.00GHz: 55 °C
Graphics
256MB GeForce 8600M GT (Dell): 63 °C

Also I did not notice any Antivirus program installed ??
Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). Copy and paste Result.txt as it appears -
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Thank You -

EXTRA added to your current problem -
Further reading shows there may be a disk fault - Please run Checkdisk as below >>
Run a Disk Check on your C: drive in Windows :

•Click Start and open Computer
Right-click on C: and select Properties
•Click on the Tools tab
•Under Error-checking click the Check Now... button
•Mark the box next to Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
•Click on the Start button
•When the message box pops up, click the Schedule disk check button and restart your computer

Once your computer restarts it will check the drive, don't press any keys so that it is allowed to do so

The check should take about 1 hour (or so) for all 5 stages, so please let it run -

A result of the scan can be found if you look at the Event Viewer as described in the article below - Please post the log -
Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log

Thank You -

Some good anti virus's that are free are: MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), AVG free, Avast (Free edition), I think Trend Micro has a free edition but I am not sure.

A couple of paid ones are: Trend Micro Titanium, Avast, Norton, Symantec. Google anti viruses for more info :)

Hi jxm1092,

After you finish with noknojon's instructions for posting MiniToolBox and Check Disk log, give some good thought to cleaning the laptop to improve airflow and reduce temperatures; especially if it has never been performed before.

If you don't feel comfortable removing the cover and cleaning the fan/heat sink, then at least perform the following:

  • Turn off and unplug laptop. Use a can of compressed air on the intake vent (bottom) and exhaust vent (on side). Some recommend using a vacuum on the exhaust while blowing air into the intake.
  • When in use, make sure that the laptop isn't placed on a soft surface where the air intake, usually on the bottom of the laptop, could become blocked.
  • Adjust the computer Power Options settings in Control Panel to save power on components, allow sleep, or to turn off hard drives sooner.
  • If temperatures are still high, use a laptop cooling pad.
If you do feel comfortable removing the cover and cleaning the fan/heat sink, then it looks as if your laptop is not that difficult.

Regards,
Brooks

Oh and be warned. Don't wipe that stuff on ANY good clothes. Other wise it's next to hopeless to get off. Unless you've got a really good washing powder and machine! Use a rag or something to wipe your hands on.

Here is the results of the checkdisk. It only showed 3 phases though and took about 10-15 minutes at the most.

Please re-run check disk and allow all 5 stages to run - Use the method posted below >>
This should take 1 hour (on average) and should not be stopped. A 3 stage check is not a full check -

Please try the check this way -
Go Start > Accessories > Find Command Prompt > Right click on it and select Run As Administrator > Type chkdsk /r (Note the space between K and / )
Hit Enter and when asked, type Y then Reboot -

Your report shows several errors example = 4 KB in bad sectors this is enough to be concerned about, and the reason I added this check -

================ Hosts content: ================
This area is empty and shows no Hosts File is set where it should be - Did you edit the scan at all ??

To repair this follow as below >>
Download Rogue killer
Right click on it and select run as administrator
Now,click on HOSTS FIX option on right side
A log should get generated after the fix ,post the log here

The computer is crying for a full check (if you read the log above) as there are errors, and if these are not corrected we need to check your hard drive for failures
Please repost the new log -

Thank You -

EXTRA - Please make sure there is no CD or DVD in the drive while you do any of these scans, as we can get a false reading.
There are already some errors, and we do not need "mistake errors"
Thanks -

Wouldn't it be chkdsk /f /r ??

The R parameter to scan for bad sectors and the f to fix the actual disk?

@ Luke: When /r is used, then /f is implied. There is no need to use the /f switch in the command.

Hi -
That is great :)
There was a chance you did not tick both boxes ?? when you did the first check, and that would only show a 3 stage check over 15 minutes.

Your Hosts file should now be restored to protect you. From the RK report (Mode : HOSTSFix --Resetted HOSTS: )
A small infection or the listed file problems may have caused this problem. Sorry but I only asked about the edit to be sure -

<< Windows has made corrections to the file system. >> Can you please just do one more quick scan for this message.
Go Start > Accessories > Find Command Prompt > Right click and select Run As Administrator > Type sfc /scannow - Click Enter. Note the space between C and /
This will only take 10 to 15 minutes and try to check the System Files that are installed. There may be a result posted at the end.

But I am still concerned about the error messages you are getting. Have you made a recent back-up of the system on CD, if needed ??
One of the Advisors here has asked to do this to make sure, as you also had errors in your first posted Speccy result.

Thank You -
Spelling Edit -

I have not made any backups of my computer recently, but if there are things I need to do that will require it I can back it up. When I ran that scan again it said windows didn't find any violations.
