My computer freezes on start up, in the middle of typing, idle mode... Everything. I have tried everything as far as running a scan for malware or viruses, ran ccleaner for registry problems, defragement.... If someone can help it would be gladly appreciated.
Thanks

Freezes can be caused by any number of things...with my vote going to overheating as the most likely, most unrecognized-by-users cause. But...it's not as simple as I would like to think :).

COMPUTER FREEZES - http://www.jrwhipple.com/computer_hangs.html

What model Dell system do you have? Have you tried running the Dell Diagnostics package?

Please download MiniToolBox , save it to your desktop and run it.

Try uninstalling Frost Wire...and see how it runs. Just a reminder that file-sharing software is an open invitation for cloaked or even obvious malware for many.

Ditto for Windows Live One Care, install Microsoft Security Essentials.

You seem to have Firefox problems...I would uninstall it, install IE 8 via Windows Update, and use it instead...or just uninstall/reinstall Firefox.

Seems to me that the security of your system should be in question...last time you ran an AV scan by a reliable, updated AV?

I would replace CA Yahoo Antispy with SUPERAntiSpyware.

I see that your O/S install date goes back to 2004. I suspect that you need to remove the case cover and remove accumulated dust, etc. from the system by now.

Hi,

To free up more resources, I would add to what hamluis recommends and suggest that you also uninstall the following:

Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer
Norton Safe Web Lite
Viewpoint Media Player
Yahoo! Toolbar

You are running Avast Anti-virus V 7.0, which is a good anti-virus so I don't feel that you need Microsoft Security Essential. Both are good, free, and use little computer resources.

Regards,
Brooks

My computer freezes on start up, in the middle of typing, idle mode... Everything. I have tried everything as far as running a scan for malware or viruses, ran ccleaner for registry problems, defragement.... If someone can help it would be gladly appreciated.
Thanks

Just a quick note Bleeping Computer advises against registry repair.

For your Dimension 2400 in case you've never opened it there is a little plastic coated lever that sticks out the back on the left side. Push that down and putting your fingers in the depression in the left side cover near the rear push the side backwards and remove it.
The Green cover can be swung out for cleaning purposes. Just pull it gently to you and swing it.

The Heat sink and fan do build up dust. Also on the 2400 they build up loads of dust between the front plastic cover and the metal of the case.

Removing the Computer Cover

Removing the Front Panel

Removing the Microprocessor I only post this to show Number 8, Do not do the rest of the instructions on this page. Lift the air shroud to disengage the anchors and then rotate the shroud up.

Good Luck
Roger

My comment re Live One Care/MSE was made before I saw that Avast was installed...and I forgot to amend my words.

In any case, I would suspect that having Live One Care and any other AV installed at the same time...could lead to system problems.

I tried to download ie8 but when it trieds to extract it says "files are corrupt". I think that's why I downloaded an older version before because the scipts would cause me problems whenever i try to open something.
The only thing I havent done yet was open the case & clean out the dust. I will be doing that shortly

At what stage (exactly) did the freeze occur?

Any error message?

Do the fans continue to work or does the system lose power?

It will freeze on start up. Then i would push the power button for 5 seconds until it cuts off then would turn it back on. It will then freeze 5 minutes after i turn it back on.
The only message i would see is something saying volume e fat 32 is dirty.
I'm not sure if the fans are blowing... How can i check that? Can I check that while my computer is on?

Thanks...

Please...duplicate the error situation on your system...write down the exact wording of the error message...then post same.

<<It will then freeze 5 minutes after i turn it back on...>>

Exactly...what are you doing on the system at the point the freeze occurs? What program are you running?
