I have windows 7 home premuim 64 bit. I recently had a virus infect my system. It started off by popping up with something that said i had hard disk errors and then told me i needed to buy a program to fix it. It spammed me with error messages and i was forced to reboot in safe mode. When i did this i ran malewarebytes and superantispyware which found some things and deleted them. I thought i was ok then but when i rebooted to normal windows my start menu was empty and i had other error messages popping up. I didn't know what to do so i restored to an old restore point and then made backup disks. This didn't solve the issues though as i still get redirecting when using IE. Also my computer will be idle but connected to the internet and random ads will play while nothing is opened. It started with a some lady talking about chineas art, then the themem music to the IE commercial can be heard playing, and lately i hear an ad for Barack Obama. This sounds play randomly. Also i play world of warcraft online and i usually get a latency of around 80 to 90, but sense getting infected my latency is 4000 to 5000 so i can not play at all. I have no idea what to do, i will reinstall windows if i have to because nothing on my computer is that valuable, i can get everything again. I downloaded DeFogger and ran DDS, here are the logs. Thank you for any help it is very much appreciated.

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of hartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

Security Check

  • Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Ok so i got combofix to run by disabling Microsoft Security Essentials. After taking over an hour to complete the run here is the log from combofix. Everything went ok after turning off antivirus and didn't restart during the scan.

After reading the log is sas microsoft security essentials is enabled but i turned off real-time protection. After reading this i went and turned off every option in MSE. Do i need to run combofix again?

Greetings

I need you to make a bootable usb and to make a screenshot for me - follow the instructions below to do this

How to create a bootable Puppy USB Drive

  • Download and save a copy of the latest Puppy ISO file
  • Download and save a copy of Unetbootin for Windows.
  • Insert an empty formatted USB drive into a USB port on the computer that's being used to create the bootable USB.
  • Launch Unetbootin ....
  • Ensure that Disk Image is selected.
  • Using the browse button ... browse to and select the Puppy ISO file.
  • Ensure that Type: is set to USB Drive and that the Drive: letter corresponds to the USB drive.
  • Click OK
Unetbootin will now copy the Puppy files to the USB and make it a bootable device.

Next

You need to change the boot order of the computer to boot from a USB drive ....

  • Read HERE for instructions how to do this.

Now boot into Puppylinux

when you get to the desktop Click on each of the drive items found in the bottom left corner to mount them (when mounted they will have a red cross next to them)

Next - Launch GParted which is found at Menu > System > GParted partition manager,
Click to select All Drives then click Okay
I need you to take a screenshot of the window that opens up - to do this follow these instructions

To take a screenshot in Puppy ....

With the GParted window open ...

  • Click menu > Graphic > mtPaint-snapshot screen capture
  • A small window will open ....

    • Click Capture Now
    • Click OK
  • The mtPaint program will open ....
    • Click File > Save
    • Double click on ../
    • Double click on mnt/
    • Double click on sdb1/
    • Set File Format to JPEG
    • Enter screenshot1 into the text box
    • Click OK

This will save a file screenshot1.jpeg into the USB drive, paste or attach this to your next post

Next

  • Click menu > shutdown > power off computer
  • If prompted to save the session click on No

Puppy will now close down.

remove the usb and save it - we will use it again - boot back into windows and send me the screen capture

If i need to buy a USB what size do i need and do you know any cheap good ones that i can order. Thank you for all your help.

I bought usb flash drive; followed steps that you stated. completed mounting and taking picture then tried to reboot and after trying to reboot in safe mode with networking the computer gets stuck on the loading screen that says please wait just before where you enter user name and password. I'm not able to get windows to boot up either by using a back up disc or the hard drive (in any mode incl safe mode).

do i need to let the loading screen where it says please wait keep loading or is my computer freezing at this point?

I've waited on the loading screen for 10 minutes and nothing happens.
(friend is posting this message from their computer)

thank you,

Kyle

eta "ran system scans from the boot menu and the primary battery is showing as failed, will this affect anything? everything else including hard drive scanned ok"

Greetings

I have not heard of that before and the little research I have done seems to lead that the battery has gone dead

How are you reporting here? From another computer?

Attached File  screenshot2.jpg   197.52KB   2 downloadsAfter looking at the disc i had in the drive i realized it was the wrong backup disc. So i inserted the right one and it let me boot up off the backup into normal windows. I went to a friends house across the street and posted on their computer. I am now home on the one we are working on. I got the information at the battiery because while i got frustrated and could not start i went through the tools that are enabled by pressing esc before boot up bringing you to the preboot menu with a system diagonostic tool. I scanned the hard disk and that was fine, scanned the memory and that was fine, but when i tried to do a system tuneup it said failed because the primary battiery failed. I then used the option to check the battiery with the diagonitic tool and it again said it failed. I am showing a full charge and the power is working fine though.

I am having trouble booting windows off the hard drive. I have to insert the backup disck and load off of that. I got a usb drive and tried to recreate what you asked for. Attached is a file hopefully that will be what you need to help.

After reading your directions again im not sure if i completed what you asked me to do. Sorry for being so new to doing this. Do i need to follow you instructions better and redo? I truly appreciate all your help Gringo.

Thanks,
Kyle
