After working with

boopme
on this topic : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic466206.html/page__pid__2829459#entry2829459

on my computer, he referred my to this forum.

He thinks that it is not an infection but something else. The computer will from time to time bog down especially if it has been left alone for a while. Something will have the HD going and the light will stay on steadily and it takes forever to get control back to where I can even type a message like this. I can't tell from Process Explorer what is occupying the HD.

I hope that you can help.

Thanks

There are still times during the day when the computer will bog down and the HD light will stay on steadily. Is there more that I can do to try to fix this?

Check the file system...run the chkdsk /r command.

Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter. Type Y in new screen and hit Enter. Reboot.

Hi,

Posted 30 August 2012 - 08:49 AM

Partial results of Eset online scan from your malware post: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic466206.html/page__view__findpost__p__2824084

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Downloads\imf-setup.exe multiple threats cleaned by deleting - quarantined

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Downloads\asc-setup-v5.exe multiple threats cleaned by deleting - quarantined

The above are IObit Malware Fighter 1.5 and Advanced SystemCare 5.

My recommend would be to remove the following software via Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs.

Advanced SystemCare 5
HijackThis 2.0.2 (Version: 2.0.2)
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 1.7 (Symantec Corporation)
Macromedia Flash Player
McAfee Security Scan Plus

Regards,
Brooks

Good pickup Artrooks, I missed these in the first posts -

Do you have your own Antivirus program installed or just LiveReg (Symantec Corporation) from a company / school ??

If you are only depending on the IObit system, you should remove this and install a decent free Antivirus program -
First remove it from ADD / REMOVE in Control Panel then follow the steps below >>
Please follow these directions to remove traces of IObit >> Remove IObit > Info >Tool

Now install only one of the free programs listed below as your Antivirus and be sure your Firewall is turned on -
Microsoft Security Essentials (what I currently use) -
Avira AntiVir
avast!
AVG Currently rated as the lowest by Microsoft MVPs -

Thank you -

Thank you for this advice. I have done the above. Could you recommend a program like Advanced system care to take care of cleaning the registry and fixing windows errors, etc.? I will see how the computer performs today. Do I need to do anything else?

Thanks,

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:
  • Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
  • Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.
  • Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.
  • Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.
  • The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

Hi -
In one word NO -
There is no such program and most are not worth paying for anything they claim to fix -
Most are preying on people that think a one click program will cure all your problems, but they will never do that -
This is about as good as most of these programs ever get - Click on the diagnostics for a full report on your system
