Dear,

I was advised by Albert Frankenstein in the Windows XP forum to follow the Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log which I did in the prescribed order. None of the scans (AdAware, Spybot, McAfee Antivirus & Stinger) found anything except for Tracking Cookies (in AdAware) and DSO Exploit - 5 Entries (in Spybot). DSO Exploit comes up every scan no matter how often Spybot fixes it.

Please find the log file of HijackThis below this message.

The problem is the following: Everytime I shutdown my PC I get a pop-up saying explorer.exe is not responding and will shut down with a progress bar. This takes about a minute and then I get a pop-up window saying that it's not responding with the option of pressing End Now. This then shuts down the PC.

Is this a serious problem? A virus?

Could somebody please tell me how to solve this?

Many thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Morgane

PS. I have McAffee Firewall with Antivirus and AdAware and Spybot which I use regularly. I had a Virus (trojan, I think) called oleupdate (maskerading as Windowsupdate) a month ago, but got rid of it by deleting it in safe mode (following the instructions from this site).

Welcome,
Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

=============

Disable TeaTimer:

Please disable TeaTimer as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable TeaTimer:
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu , and make sure "Advanced Mode " is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer " and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable TeaTimer again.

===============

When we're done cleaning off your system, i'd recommend that you install all the critical windows updates available from Microsoft, upto service pack 1. This will help to make your system more secure and prevent many 'problems' from reoccuring in the future.

===============

Next, locate CWShredder that you downloaded earlier and run it, then:

1. Click "Fix ->"

===============

Download, unzip to your desktop About:Buster and run it, then:

1. Click "Update".
2. Click "Check For Update"

(If no new version is available, skip to step #4.)

3. Click "Download Update", and wait for it to be installed.
4. Click "Start".

(Wait for the initial ADS scan to complete.)

5. Click "Yes", to shutdown any IE session currently open.

(Wait for the about:blank scan to complete.)

6. Click "Ok", to scan once more.
7. Click "Yes", to shutdown any IE sessions currently open.
8. Click "Yes", to begin the second pass.

9. Click "Save log", and post this log back along with your new log.
10. Click "Exit".
11. Click "Exit".

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs (Start > Control Panel)and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

MyWebSearch

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\acizv.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\acizv.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\acizv.dll/sp.html#28129

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\acizv.dll/sp.html#28129

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9C1B2B2A-8963-C92B-AF30-4849E4570A9A} - C:\WINDOWS\d3ye32.dll (file missing)

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredits/...GB_ZNxuk15654GB

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Using Windows Explorer (Start > All Programs > Accessories). Locate and delete the following item(s), if present

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\acizv.dll

===============

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Dear Mat2,

Many thanks for your reply and instructions! :thumbsup: I have just followed all the steps as described in your post.

I ran About:Buster 6.01 twice in safemode but I couldn't download an update as I wasn't given the option.
It did find something which was deleted in the first scan, but nothing in the 2nd one. After each scan I got error message "run time error 339" about component "comclt32.ocx" which I have replaced as advised in About:Buster Readme

I could not find MyWebSearch in the Add/Remove in Control Panel

In HijackThis I have found and fixed
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9C1B2B2A-8963-C92B-AF30-4849E4570A9A} - C:\WINDOWS\d3ye32.dll (file missing). Please find the new log below.

I could not find acizv.dll in System32.

Unfortunately Explorer.exe is still not responding at shut down

What really worries me is the following: When I re-enabled Teatimer in Spybot I got all these Registry Change questions, here's one:

Spybot registry change
Category: Browser Page
Change: Value changed
Entry: Search Page
Old Data: About: Blank
New Data: http://home.microsoft.com/search/search.a

I answered "deny" to all of them. Was that the correct thing to do? I normally only accept them when I install or un-install software, is that correct?

Again many thanks for your help!

Best regards,

Morgane

Hi

Thanks for the new log and info

With regards to spybot teatimer showing all those changes especially with the registry is due to the line which HJT removed were located in the registry. Also the warning of a change to your default search settings was due to the remove of coolwebsearch and reseting it back to the correct default search engine. If you see any warning message about a change you are unsure about press Deny as you did in this case. It is better to block something than allow something which caould cause you potential problems,

Let's continue on with the fix...

1. Restart your computer. As your computer restarts, repeatedly press the F8 key on your keyboard until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
2. Use the arrow key to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
3. Use an arrow key to select an operating system and press ENTER.
4. When prompted whether you want your Windows to run in safe mode, click Yes.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9C1B2B2A-8963-C92B-AF30-4849E4570A9A} - C:\WINDOWS\d3ye32.dll (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Restart window back into normal mode. Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Dear Mat2,

Thanks a lot for the latest instructions! :thumbsup:

In HijackThis I could find and fix

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

but the "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9C1B2B2A-8963-C92B-AF30-4849E4570A9A} - C:\WINDOWS\d3ye32.dll (file missing)" was listed as "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9C1B2B2A-8963-C92B-AF30-4849E4570A9A}" without the "- C:\WINDOWS\d3ye32.dll (file missing)" bit. So I thought I'd ask before I did anything with it. :flowers:

Shall I fix it with HijackThis as well?

Many thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Morgane

Hi

but the "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9C1B2B2A-8963-C92B-AF30-4849E4570A9A} - C:\WINDOWS\d3ye32.dll (file missing)" was listed as "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9C1B2B2A-8963-C92B-AF30-4849E4570A9A}" without the "- C:\WINDOWS\d3ye32.dll (file missing)" bit. So I thought I'd ask before I did anything with it.

Yes you can remove this with HJT . :thumbsup:

Dear Mat2,

I followed the preparation guide again and McAfee Stinger found the following:

w32/sdbot.worm ftp virus
C:Windows\system32\o has been deleted

Adaware found 9 tracking cookies, Antivir and SpyBot found nothing.

Please find below the latest logfile of HijackThis.

Many thanks! :thumbsup:

Best regards,

Morgane

Dear Mat2,

Thank You! :thumbsup:

CWShredder did not find anything infected.

In HijackThis I found & Fixed the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9C1B2B2A-8963-C92B-AF30-4849E4570A9A} - (no file)

After I had finished SpyBot went "mental" :flowers: asking me to allow or deny the following registry change:

Category: Browser Page
Change: Value Changed
Entry: Search Assistant
Old Data: About blank
New Data:
http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_BFC1766} (it is possible that "B" of "BFC" is an "R" as it is not legible)

It must have asked me over 20 times and then I clicked "Allow" and SpyBot did not respond anymore...

Was that the correct thing to do? :huh:

Please find below the new log file.

Many thanks!

Kind regards,

Morgane

Yes you did

Just one question, How is your computer running and also are you still having problems with Explorer?

Thanks

Hi Mat2,

Thank you for your quick reply!

Yes unfortunately the PC is still slow especially the 'connect to broadband window' takes about half a minute to come up and there isn't a sign that it is responding to the mouse click (cursor doesn't change to 'busy') and Outlook can take a while opening too, as can Windows Explorer. Both seem to be slower responding as well once they are running.

Explorer.exe isn't responding either at every shutdown.

Mentioning cursors it occurs to me that I might have done something really silly :thumbsup: that might have been (?) the start of all my troubles. I downloaded smileys (with a smiley bar for Outlook) and cursors from smiley central which also brings up a pop-up page called My Websearch. What reminded me of this is that I after telling you about the 'busy' cursor, thought I better change the cursor setting back to the standard cursor, but clicking on the cursor tab in the Mouse menu of the Control Panel I got the following message:

The C:\Program Files\FunWebProducts\shared\00145F16.dat file, which contains the 'Normal Select' cursor is either missing or corrup.

I now also remember that SpyBot found and deleted something called FunWebProducts (I think) and at some point later I realised that the smileys and cursors had gone (not always the fastest horse in the stable...). After that I thought no more of it...

Best regards and feeling very daft,

Morgane

Hi

Thanks for the update on how your computer is running. here is the next stage

Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

First:
Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

Once completed can you post the ewido log and a new HJT log in your next reply, thanks
Mat2
