For about a week or so now its been asking me to update. (I always let it update) But until recently it will ask me to update and restart my computer, it boots me off and goes into the update download screen. At around 14% the download randomly stops, says it cannot continue, and turns off. When I turn the laptop back on I am yet again prompted to update my windows. Please help!

Open an elevated command prompt.Hit the start button the type cmd in the run box, right click the cmd and select run as admin.

Now type net stop bits

Now go to the following file location. c:\windows\softwaredistribution\datastore\logs Then select everything inside and delete it some may resist deletion,it is ok skip the ones that will not delete.
Now reboot your machine and run the fix it in the link below You may have already run this one but you will need to run it again since we are performing the steps above.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Open An elevated Command Prompt and Type or copy and paste the contents of the code box hitting enter after each one, then typing exit and rebooting the machine.

net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
net stop wuauserv
cd c:\windows\system32
ren catroot2 catroot2.old
cd c:\windows
ren softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.old

Now try updates after the above if it fails see below.

After my set of instructions check windows update and if it is a no go then I would like for you to try and run the fix it below from the built in admin account that is in vista.

Open an elevated command prompt and copy and paste or type the contents of the code box into the command prompt window.

net user administrator /active:yes

Now log out of your account and log into the admin account. Then run the fix it below and put a tick next to aggresive mode.
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683

After running the tool reboot and see if you are able to update your machine, from within the admin account.Under a clean boot.
To do a clean boot hit the start button then type msconfig then hit the startup tab and uncheck everything hit apply. Then under the services tab put a check next to hide microsoft services then untick all that remain, hit apply close msconfig reboot and check updates from within the admin account.

Thats what ended up working, so far im pretty sure that the update was able to configure. As for all the changes that I made, do I need to change them back and what exactly happened

You will need to re-enable your services from the msconfig and then re-enable the startup items you wish the only one that you really need is your antiviurs.

As far as what happened I am not sure updates are tricky to say the least i just know what works sometimes.....

Glad to hear the issue is resolved. To disable the admin account you need to open elevated command prompt and type

net user administrator /active:no
then reboot your machine.
