When I try to use the video capture option from either Snagit or Debut Video Capture software my computer crashes. No blue screen of death. It just shuts off. Attached is the crash information that appears on reboot. I have 3 GB of RAM which is more than either program requires. Debut used to work but started crashing the computer about a week ago which is why I got Snagit. Didn't help.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Have you tried uninstalling...then reinstalling the programs?

These are the only programs affected?

Please download MiniToolBox , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

hi hamluis,
Thank you for your help. The MiniToolBox results are below. I did uninstall and reinstall the software but it didn't make a difference. After my initial post I downloaded and installed Mozilla Firefox and both video softwares worked fine in that browser so I guess it's something in Internet Explorer. I still would like to get it working in IE because that's the only browser that the company I work for allows for its remote access.

It's been five years since I re-installed Windows XP so there's probably a lot of junk in there. I know I'm overdue but it's 2-3 solid days of work for me do that and I just don't have that kind of time. If there are any clean up activities that you could recommend or anything else you see in the outputs that would be great.

I suggest that you:
a. Uninstall these programs
b. Then run the chkdsk /r command on your Windows partition.
c. Then run the sfc /scannow command.

Chkdsk /r: Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter. Type Y in new screen, hit Enter. Reboot the system.

How To Use Sfc.exe To Repair System Files - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic43051.html

Looking at some of the software your system reflects...seems to bring a number of Google hits indicating that it's possible that you are downloading/installing illegal software. My intent is only to remind you of the increased risk of malware being reflected in such software that is not of a legal origin and thus...provides no legal recourse for users who get infected.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:
  • Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
  • Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.
  • Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.
  • Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.
  • The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

Thank you so much! Some things I wanted to ask about.
1. I uninstalled 2 of the 4 programs you'd mentioned but couldn't find the other two (GearDrvs 1.0 and 5.0). I tried the Control Panel add/delete programs option and also just did a search of the C: drive. Could you tell me how to find it?

2. sfc /scannow ran fine but took a long time. Over 90minutes. I wasn't at the computer when it finished and nothing was posted. It was just the desktop. There wasn't a log file on either the desktop of in the c:\ directory. I'm assuming that means everything was fine but wanted to ask if that was normal behavior.

3. When I tried to run chkdsk /r I got a notice "type of file system is NTFS; cannot lock current drive" so that diagnostic wasn't run.

4. I've never downloaded (at least intentionally!) any illegal programs so if you could point out which those are, I'd really like to get rid of them. When I look at the installed program list there are many I don't recognise but am afraid to uninstall for fear that they're necessary. An example is PowerDVD. No idea what it is but the Google search says it's a Microsoft product so I'm afraid uninstalling it will turn the computer into a door-stop.

Thank you!

If you have anything by Glary Utilities...reflected in Add/Remove Programs...uninstall it. Some installs pack more than one program into a package and that seems to be a favorite technique for Glary.

If sfc /scannow ran and then closed, that's not necessarily normal (IME), but it should mean that no problems were found or that the files were seamlessly replaced/reinstalled.

Did you follow my directions for running chkdsk /r? The system should have no problem locking a partition/drive when such occurs before booting into Windows.

As I said...you can use Google to find out which programs are readily available via torrents and reflect keygens. I'm not saying that your installed programs are obtained illegally...just wanting to make sure that you are aware of the risk of such, whether installed by you or someone else.

As for Power DVD...if you don't use a program, there is no reason to have it installed on your computer system, IMO. Again, Google can help you divine the anticipated purpose and userfulness of programs reflected on your system.

Thank you. I think we're set. I figured out my mistake and got chkdsk /r to run. It didn't find anything. Your comments about uninstalling programs gave me the confidence to uninstall a bunch with no ill effects, at least so far!

Thank you again.
