Windows 7 Starter running on a Dell Inspiron mini.

Start menu is mostly blank, but program files directory still has folders and files.

File associations still seem active. Can click on a Word doc and Word will open.

Seems to have some bug.

Malwarebyte's 1.50.1.1100 Database Version 912082304 installed

Avira Antivir Personal with definition file 7.11.41.62 installed

Thanks

Jason

what about startmenu programs?

Right click on your startmenu-properties

Check mark

store and display recently opened programs
store and display recently items

Click on customize

Click on Use default settings at the bottom

click ok

Were you infected?

store and display recently opened programs
store and display recently items

Above check boxes were already checked.

Clicked Use Default Settings

Start > All Programs selection is still pretty much empty (same as before): Internet Explorer, Google Chrome Folder and McAfee Online Backup folder which is empty.

I think the Avira AntiVirus may have picked something up a while back, but not sure what it said. I did not do a good job of recording it. I don't use this computer much, but my wife does. I think there was something about a hard drive fault or critical error. It did some scan and that was part of the report. Has not done that since the antivirus software picked up a couple of items it did not like.

go to

c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows

right click on startmenu folder, click on restore previous versions

Now select a snapshot before you were infected by the rogue, click on restore

You should get back the startmenu programs

This may restore the fake HDD rogue folder with dead icons, just delete the folder.

Oldest restore point is 8-26 and is the same as now. Apparently the restore point save was not turned on until recently.

Same thing for the System restore. Oldest restore point is 8-26.
