I am having a prob connecting to ::
acs4.shortcovers.com:8080/fulfillment/URLLink.acsm?action=enterorder&ordersource=Shortcovers&orderid=27624b5a-876f-4b20-8ac7-856f49ea709a&resid=urn%3auuid%3ae6b348f9-cd83-41bd-b724-80abbdaab3dc&gbauthdate=08%2f24%2f2012+01%3a21+UTC&dateval=1345771319&g

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at acs4.shortcovers.com:8080.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

This is a link to fetch a book i bought from Kobo. Once it downloads to my desktop, the adobe digital editions opens it and I am free to read. Until recently this happened with ease. Since running a tool called "tweaking.co_windows_repair", this has ceased to happen.
despite my best efforts i cannot get the link to download.
I also discover a service (disabled) in amongst services.msc called .."MAI".....cannot find any info regarding it anywhere.
Any clues ??....I have turned windows firewall off....and still no go.
I have attempted to connect via IE8...still no go.
My PC runs rather well in every other regard.
I am stumped.

Do you have a restore point or create one before running windows repair tool?

You could try a system restore

I entered that URL hoping to see a sign in page. Not knowing anything about that site I don't know if that is what I should see.

What I did see was IE telling me the page cannot be displayed.

SeaMonkey informed me

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

<error data="E_ADEPT_URL_SIGNATURE_ERR http://acs4.shortcovers.com:8080/fulfillment/URLLink.acsm GBLINK_AUTH_NO_AUTH_PARAM"/> (this link gives the same basic message with something about Adobe added)

It may not be anything you have done that will not allow the page to connect.

Since you purchased the book from Kobo, I am going to assume you have a registered account with Kobo.

Have you tried signing in to your account at Kobo to see if you can retrieve the book if that is what you are trying to do?

G'day folks, sorry it has taken me a while to respond. Diabetes give you up days and down days, and this one is a downer.
Queen-Evie....yes i have an account and i have attempted to retrieve my book from every 'angle' I can, and no go......

NarenXP, I had already done a system restore prior to starting this thread.....however.....upon talking to my son, he bought home to me the realization that
my timing is a bit out.........ie......the restore i had already done took my PC back to just prior to the last time I ran 'windows repair tool'.......the conversation with my son reminded me that I had run the tool some days prior to this as well.......so,.....I took the restore back as far as i could....and....BINGO.
Just as an interesting side issue.....I also use Yahoo messenger....and signing in usually takes no longer than 5 seconds tops.
I had noticed that messenger was taking an inordinate length of time to complete the signing in process.....up to 25 seconds.
After this latest system restore, that little hiccup has also disappeared.
The "MAI" service is still a conundrum.....but is probably not harming anything.

All good folks......thank you for your interest.....I do realize that you have far more pressing issues to deal with than this.
Kind Regards,
Brian (Condobloke)

Happy to know that it worked

Right click on MAI service-properties

What do you find in DESCRIPTION or PATH TO EXECUTABLE?

No idea what it might be.

Delete the MAI key from registry as the service is DISABLED already and is of no use.

OK....all good...rebooted....tested the PC in as many areas as I could in a short while....and all appears to be normal.
I will keep that registry key on my desktop for a week or so.

Thank you Narenxp......as usual you have bought home the bacon !

Brian (Condobloke)
