Good Evening all,

I hate to bug you all but I have been working on this issue for 2 days now and it has got the better of me.

I have a home network set up and for years no issues have occured. A few days ago, one of my laptops that I have used for over 2 years with a wireless connection was unable to connect to the internet. It was able connect to the network but not the internet. I thought this was odd as my Kindle and Ipod Touch connected online fine. So I got out my work laptop and that connected to the wireless perfectly fine. Also got onto my desktop that uses a usb wireless adaptor and it worked fine to. I ran Microsoft's troubleshooter tool and it says "Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server)." I have tried just about everything I know and what I have found online but with no luck. I am just lost because all of the other computers can use the wireless network fine to access the internet and up until a few days ago I could on the trouble computer. Please let me know if you need any other details!

Here is the details requested:

Make and model of computer

Dell Inspiron 1750, Windows 7 64 bit,

How the computer is connected (wireless or wired)

Wireless

Make and model of Router

Linksys, Wireless G Broadband Router, Model WRT54G

Approximate Distance From the router the PC is if its a wireless connection

Less then 20 ft (One floor above router but never this is the same spot where it use to be able to connect to the internet fine).

What type of internet you have (Dsl, Cable, T-1,etc..)

Century Link and not exactly sure on the type...

Your DNS server has the wrong IP address (its on a different subnet then your home network). Clear your settings as the link jhayz posted shows and select "automatic". If "automatic" doesn't work, set your primary to 8.8.8.8 and secondary to 8.8.4.4.

Both of those are public DNS servers run by Google.

jhayz & NpaMA, settings were already set to automatic.

Narenxp, your reccomendation worked like a charm! Is this a known issue with McAfee?

Thank you all for your thoughts and reccomendations!

Great find narenxp. Didn't know there was a recent bug for McAfee since I was not using their software product.

Why is an anti-virus changing IP settings? McAfee just made my list of never using again (even though I haven't used them in a few years).

Just my two cents on the issue regarding your question NpaMA :) particularly the McAfee bug update. Reading online through the disseminated information handed out by the experts and tech bloggers, the OAS (on-access scanner) feature of McAfee with a buggy update cause this unknown IP address which is also a part of OAS responsibility in protecting the computer system. Further looking to the basic function of OAS lead me to this Topic from Symantec site written by Bill Hayes.

The on-access scanner places itself between programs and the operating system. It examines programs as they interact with files, memory areas and network functions. It has to examine a suspicious program's behavior and halt malevolent software before the software executes. Viruses, trojan horses, and other malevolent Web applications are all part of the on-access scanner's patrol. Part of the challenge of an effective on-access scanner is that it must be diligent and capable of scanning each accessed file while not interfering with the functionality of the machine.

This is just a quick research and reading on my part but I could be wrong in my perception of things as I am not a malware or security expert.
