I have been trying for about 2 weeks to uninstall Avira Anti Virus Premium 2012. This is a legit program, not one of those fake antiviruses which try to trick you into buying their program by holding your computer hostage. I have tried the advice recommended in this topic and also from Avira's technical support. Unfortunately, nothing they have suggested has worked so now I think I'm infected. My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate Edition SP1 64-bit.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/465889 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you should not bother creating a GMER log.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Greetings RushSonic and :welcome: to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum.

My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary. :thumbup2: If you prefer I call you something other than your screen name I would be pleased to do so.

===================================================

Ground Rules:

  • First, I would also like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. :)
  • Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance.
  • Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence.
  • Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me about it.
  • When you post your reply, do not use the Posted Image button but use the Posted Image button instead.
  • In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the Posted Image button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response.
  • If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.
  • When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.
  • I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.
  • Now let's get started :thumbup2:

===================================================

Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.

Thank you for your patience thus far. Please allow me some time to review the information you have provided. I will post back as soon as possible.
Gary

If I do not reply within 24 hours please send me a Personal Message.

Greetings RushSonic,

I have reviewed the information you posted and do not see any evidence of an infection. Other than not being unable to deal with Avira, are you experiencing any other issues?

Do you still want me to put up the new DDS log?

I have not experienced any other issues except for getting requests to allow a outdated security certificate for Oracle Java. I think it is to update it but I kept rejecting it just in case. I can put up the exact message but I can not do it unti about 3 hours from now because I am busy.

Greetings RushSonic,

From your previous post:

I'm going to put up a log of my current systema and if nothing comes from that I will reformat my hard drive and switch to Linux.

Are you planning on reformatting and installing Linux because of the Avira issue? If not, then please post a new DDS. We can also address the Java issue as well.

Greetings RushSonic,

I still don't see any infections but there are a few things I would like to bring to your attention.

===================================================

Spybot S&D No Longer Recommended

--------------------

MVPS.org is no longer recommending Spybot S&D due to poor testing results. (scroll down on the web site and read under Freeware Antispyware Products)

Further, most people don't understand Spybot's TeaTimer or how to use it and that feature can cause more problems than it's worth. TeaTimer monitors changes to certain critical keys in Windows registry but does not indicate if the change is normal or a modification made by a malware infection. The user must have an understanding of the registry and how TeaTimer works in order to make informed decisions to allow or deny the detected changes. Additionally, TeaTimer may conflict with other security tools which do a much better job of protecting your computer and even prevent disinfection of malware by those tools.

I strongly recommend uninstalling Spybot Search & Destroy. The presence of this program can make cleaning your computer more difficult.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (or Programs and Features) and delete the program.

Reboot your computer prior to the next step.

===================================================

P2P Warning

--------------------

Going over your logs I noticed that you have µTorrent and qBittorrent 2.9.7 installed. It is pretty much certain that if you continue to use P2P programs, you will get infected again.

  • Avoid gaming sites, pirated software, cracking tools, keygens, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs.
  • They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites.
  • Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and malicious Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users.
  • The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid these types of web sites and not use any P2P applications.
I would recommend that you uninstall µTorrent and qBittorrent 2.9.7, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove the program, you can do so via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

If you are still leaning toward using this program, please take a look at this information about Ransomware which can be delivered via P2P file transfers. The newest variation of Ransomware can make it impossible to recover the files this malicious software encrypts. In other words, you will probably lose most if not all of your valuable information, including pictures.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until we are completely done and your machine is determined to be clean and updated.

===================================================

Java is exploited by malicious software writers and the pop ups do look suspicious. Since your Java needs to be updated let's delete the existing version and start fresh.

Update Java for 64 bit Systems

-------------------

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for the JRE icon Posted Image underneath "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right and a new page will open.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select Windows x64 31.18 MB jre-7u6-windows-x64.exe
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.

  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u6-windows-x64.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.

To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:

  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

I've almost made all the changes you suggested. I removed uTorrent but I kept qBittorent because I use that to download things like LibreOffice. Also, I'm having some trouble removing the Java SDK 6 Update 21 (64-bit). When I try to do it, I get this message:

Internal Error 2318, C:\Program Files\Java\jdk 1.6.0_21\jre\lib\zi\MST7MDT

. I think this happened because I uninstalled the JRE for Java 6 before uninstalling the JDK for Java 6.

Also, I have moved the remaining Spybot folder to my Recycle Bin. There were two programs inside it, TeaTimer and SDWinSec.
For protecting the HOSTS file, is SpywareBlaster Pro alright?

UPDATE: I reinstalled the JRE for Java 6. When I tried to uninstall the JDK for Java 6, I got this message instead:

Internal Error 2318, C:\Program Files\Java\jdk 1.6.0_21\jre\lib\zi\Indian\Kerguelen

Actually, i was able to uninstall the JDK 6 using CCleaner. I'm not sure how it could uninstall it but the Windows Add and Remove programs could not.

Greetings RushSonic,

For protecting the HOSTS file, is SpywareBlaster Pro alright?

Yes

Let's try to do a clean install of Java.

===================================================

Clean Install of Java Using JavaRa

-------------------

Please download JavaRa and save the file to your desktop.

  • Right click and Extract All and a new folder called "JavaRa" will be extracted
  • Once extracted, open that folder and run JavaRa.exe with the picture.
  • Select your Language which is probably English
  • Click Search For Updates
  • Select Update Using jucheck.exe
  • Click Search
  • If a newer version is found, allow it to be installed
  • Uncheck the Google Toolbar option. (if you don't want the Google tool bar)
  • When complete, click Remove Older Versions in the JavaRa interface and allow it to proceed
  • When that is complete, click Additional Tasks, then select Remove Useless JRE Files and click Go
  • It will now begin to remove older versions. Please be paitent while it does the removal process.
  • Exit the tool when complete.

Yes. Java is already installed fine on my system. I have the latest versions too.

Would it be possible for you to figure out a way that I can reinstall Avira Premium 2012? I really like that program and i just got a new license for it. I would hate for that to go to waste.

If it can't be done, what would you suggest for a free antivirus? I need one which has realtime protection and phishing protection. Do I need MalwareBytes Anti-Malware if i have Windows Defender enabled?

Greetings RushSonic,

I have reviewed the Avira issue and would have nothing beyond what Broni offered. He is one of the best malware fighters around so you have already gotten a good run at it.

Malwarebytes free edition does not proactively prohibit the introduction of malicious software on a computer. It scans after the fact. So unless you want to pay for Malwarebytes you can use Windows Defender.

Here is the standard information I give for someone who has no antivirus programs, offering 2 recommendations.

===================================================

No Antivirus Program Installed

-------------------

  • Please download and install an antivirus program, and make sure that you keep it updated.
  • New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software. Two good antivirus programs free for non-commercial home use are avast! Free Antivirus and Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus.
  • You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

Apart from the above, are there any other issues you need assistance with?

Oh My,

Alright. That's all and thanks for the help. I've gotten used to using Ubuntu 12.04 and it works fine with my system so I'm going to backup any remaing files I have left this weekend and do a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 to my system. That way i at least don't have to worry about antivirus foolishness and most of what I used windows 7 UE for comes for free with Ubuntu.
