The windows installer popup keeps flashing on and off. The only information is the banner reads "Windows Installer" and the body reads "Preparing to Install..."

I have uninstalled and updated Windows Installer from 3.1 to 4.5. I also downloaded the latest version of Installshield.

Dell Dimension 3100. Windows XP sp3. AVG antivirus.

The application event log shows two messages repeatedly:

Did you try Windows Installer Cleanup Utility as suggested in the other topic?

I did. I removed a fragment of Sonic, but that didn't help. I decided to come to this forum where people are allowed to run more powerful tools.

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

I also installed StartUpMonitor. All it ever shows is InstallShield programs like ISUSPM.

Re-run Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab and UN-check:

+ "ISUSScheduler"
+ "ISUSPM Startup"

Restart computer and let me know how it goes.

If I uncheck those, will my computer look for auto updates?

I unchecked ISUSScheduler. I'll report back later.

Autoruns does not show the other one. It used to show it, until I updated InstallShield.

Those have nothing to do with updates.

I haven't been on long enough yet. It's a sporadic problem, where it will be quiet for a while, and then start flashing. If you check back tomorrow, I'll be able to tell you for sure.

I was not able to uninstall Corel Photo Album. It threw an error:
Error 1316.A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\Windows\Installer\CPA6.msi

I was able to get it removed with Microsoft Program Installer and Uninstaller Troubleshooter.
