Hi everyone!

A few months ago I had problems with my wife's laptop and BleepingComputer forums saved me! Unfortunately it is my own PC in trouble this time. A few days ago my Microsoft Security Essentials said that my computer was not being protected and would not run correctly so I uninstalled and reinstalled it. Since then, every time I boot my PC, an error message pops up saying there is an error and it will restart in 1 minute. During this time the MSE tries to remove Sirefef.Y Sirefef.W and Sirefef.AB but usually the computer just restarts.

I have posted a log here before and was trying to run DDS, however my PC reboots before I can even complete the scan (even in safe mode)! I am posting from another computer.

Is there some kind of work around that I can use to even get started on posting logs?

Thanks for your time!

Please do the following:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Hi Catbyte,

Thank you for all of your help so far. My PC seems like it is back to normal, the main problem I was having with the endless restart is gone. I am not experiencing anything unusual, but I also have not been using the system as "normal" since starting the whole recovery process.

your BITS registry key is missing so Windows updates wont work, we need to replace it.

Please download the attached reg fix and save it to your desktop, right click it and choose to merge it into your registry (then delete the file as you wont need it again)

P2P - I see you have P2P software utorrent installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It likely contributed to your current situation. This page will give you further information.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
Please see this topic for more information:
Perils of P2P File Sharing.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall this now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Programs and Features.

please make sure windows update is working properly, use the machine as you would normally for a bit, then let me know if all is ok, if so, then we have a tool clean-up routine to do.

(which I'll give in the am, time for bed here)

I have been using the PC as normal and it seems to be working without problems. I tried to use Windows Update, but it won't download the updates I have selected. There is an error message Code 80246008. I tried to follow the onscreen instructions for fixing the problem and it is directing me to the BITS service which I could not find. I thought I installed the BITS registry key from above incorrectly and repeated the installation. However, even after repeating the installation I am not able to use Windows Update and have the same error. Thank you for all of your help so far.

After a restart, Windows Update is now working normally, and everything else is as well. Thanks again for your help.

That's good to know, (I'll make sure I include instructions for a reboot after that fix)

We just have some housekeeping to do now,

Please do the following:

You can delete all the Farbar logs and programs from your desktop.

NEXT

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix

  • Make sure your security programs are totally disabled.
  • Press the WinKey +R to open a run box
  • Now copy/paste Combofix /uninstall into the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.

If there are any logs/tools remaining on your desktop > right click and delete them.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

  • It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article
Strong passwords: How to create and use them
Then consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe. KeePass is a small utility that allows you to manage all your passwords.
