I came across another poster with a similar problem on 440221, but it became specific enough to his/her situation that I couldn't follow. I've tried a few other tricks from various other sites but am completely stuck. Here's the situation:

One of my users brought in their home computer because it was running slow and getting pop ups. They weren't running any antivirus I could find, so ran Malwarebytes and found some items and cleaned it up. Then the internet stopped working. Through some suggestions from other sites tried running TDSSKiller (found some items and removed), Spybot (found items and removed), Microsoft Security Essentials (found items and removed), AVG Free 2012 (found yet more items and removed them), as well as some other tools from other sites (similar to the Farbar Service Scanner mentioned here).

No love. I think I have all of the malware/spyware removed, but the internet connection just states "Unidentified Network, Access: Local only". I ran SFC /SCANNOW and it tells me that AFD.sys and tcpmon.ini are corrupt and not repairable. Neither are visible on the system. I tried copying afd.sys from a different vista PC (Vista Pro) but it still doesn't work.

I have run the netsh winsock reset, updated NIC drivers, uninstalled the NIC and reinstalled all with no luck.

If I try and do an ipconfig /renew, I get the message "An error occurred ...: A socket operation encountered a dead network". The IP address sits at 169.254.209.40. It's not the network, as I can use the same connection to connect with other devices. I check the status of the network connection on the PC in question and it shows that it is receiving packets, but sending nothing.

I'm kind of at a loss. Based on the other post, I ran the Farbar Service Scanner so I could attach it in case it would help. At this point I think everything is cleaned off of the computer, we just can't get the PC to connect to the internet. I've also tried reinstalling Vista SP1 but it errors out.

Currently running MS Security Essentials as the antivirus (ran another scan and it found nothing). Also have run Microsoft Malicious software removal tool, and that came up with no results. AVG, Spybot and Malwarebytes are currently uninstalled.

Any help would be appreciated ... thanks in advance.

Pretty strange...
FSS sees the file and System Look doesn't.
Unless something happened in between.

In any case download afd.sys file from my Vista and save it to some know location: http://www.bleepstatic.com/fhost/uploads/1/afd.sys

Restart computer in Safe Mode.

Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders, UN-check Hide protected operating system files.
NOTE. Make sure to reverse the above changes, when done with this step.

Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\Drivers folder.
Rename afd.sys (if exists) file to afd.old.
Copy my file and paste it to C:\Windows\system32\Drivers folder.

Restart computer normally and post new FSS log.

I got ahold of the Dell OEM Vista Home Basic CD, and long story short mounted the WIM file and got AFD.sys. Copied it into c:\windows\system32\drivers (renamed the other to afd.old) and voila! the network came up.

I'm going to try and run Windows updates on the box (it isn't even at SP1 yet). I think that'll help in the future with spyware/malware etc. I think the problem is fixed though. If you see something I'm missing please let me know.

Thanks for all the help.

When done with all updates I want you to run some checks...

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

I still am getting pop-ups with Firefox, so I'm investigating that. All up to date on Windows Updates now.

Figured out the popups. There was a "Rival Gaming" addon I apparently missed the first time. Also updated Acrobat Reader, Flash and Java and defragmented.

I'm seeing everything is in the clear. No weird behavior on the network and everything else seems to be working. Anything anyone else can see? I'm thinking I'll give it back to the user.

Thanks for the help

We have couple of issues.

Let's start with missing "hosts" file.

Download following "hosts"(zipped) file: http://www.bleepstatic.com/fhost/uploads/0/hosts_vista.zip
Unzip it.
Copy hosts file found inside.
Open Windows Explorer and paste hosts file to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder.

NOTE.
If you receive You don't have permission to save in this location message take ownership of C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/
If the above doesn't work save the file to some known location, like your desktop, copy it from there and paste it to "etc" folder.

Re-run MiniToolbox.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • List content of Hosts
Click Go and post the result.
