Had some issues with my HP laptop recently smart disk drive failure infection, which I have posted here:

Now I come in tonight and all I get is start up screen then black screen with blinking cursor. I am trying the HDD and memory tests but amnt hopeful. Anything else I can try if these don't fix the problem? Will inserting an XP disk allow me to recover or fix it? I also have recovery disk, which I got with purchase of laptop so not sure whether to use this or installation disk.

Read a post here for a similar problem and hints at potential MB failure:

The XP installation disc is a 'made up by me' disk from our software repository at work, downloaded the iso then burnt to disc although it hasn't been used to reinstall on this laptop anytime just for other machines.
