Windows XP SP3 on a PC
For several months I've been getting "Not Responding" all of the time on the top of my page where it lets you know what page and site you're on.
This is driving me insane.
I've used every scan possible (including MalwareBytes and Hijack This) and they don't show anything.
Sometimes I also get a pop up that says that a script is not responding - do I want to end it and I always do.
I only keep one browser open at a time and only one window or tab. This happens in all 3 browsers (Firefox, IE and Chrome) and also documents and whatever else I might open. And then it might be ok for a few hours.
It sometimes won't let me continue so I've got to close everything and sometimes even restart several times.
I'm unable to get anything done and I don't know what is causing this.
I really need someone to figure this out.
Thanks!

Hi -
Often this is caused by using too many Add Ons that interfere with your normal system running
First, open Firefox and disable your Add Ons to see what happens -
Next - Please download MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following boxes:

•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Thank You -

Hi -
Thanks for responding. I did disable all but the most important add-ons - there were some that I didn't add that were there since I last checked - and that improved it a lot.
The results of what you said to do -

Just a few basic things first -

Who is your normal ISP, Verizon or another company ??
How often do you use Internet Cafe type areas, like Starbucks, or any of the dozen others ??
Delete this Toolbar from Control Panel > Add / Remove >>Swag Bucks Toolbar (Version: 6.3.3.3)

First try these commands >>
For these commands, Go - Start > Run > Type CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Uninstall your AVG Antivirus as it is causing several problems at this time and just use Microsoft Security Essentials for a while -
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=183489 << Direct link to M.S.E. installer -

I will leave a Cleaner Tool for your AVG shortly to make sure it is removed -

Are you sure it's ok not to keep AVG active - it has alerted me to a couple of things recently.

Will do these things and check back.

Thanks so much!

Thank you for all of the information and I'm sorry that it took so long to respond - AVG did not want to be removed! And I used Revo uninstaller and something else happened that didn't let me get online but my original question has been resolved. I got rid of all of the programs that you mentioned.
I installed Avast so that might be better. If you've got another idea please let me know.
Thank you for taking the time to answer this. I really appreciate it.
Susan

I don't know if there is anything that you'd be able to do about this but this is what happened - after I removed AVG I had to re-start but I got the message that they were not loading Windows to protect my PC. So I went to Safe and I did a System Restore and that was the only way I was able to get online everyday for the last few days.

I called Best Buy and someone there told me that it might be because an update didn't work and I checked and that was what it was I think. It says that there is an update and if I shut down and let it update the next time the PC turns on but won't let it load Windows. When I shut down not letting it update it loads properly.
So now I am unable to let it update and I don't know how to fix it.

I might need to let them look at it or is there something that I'd be able to do that is easy - I'm not really knowledgeable about this.

I forgot - I've never been able to get Java to download. I will use what you said and see if that works.

Thanks!
Susan

We can try this to correct the Application errors that appear as -
Error - (Source: Application Hang) (User: )
Description: Hanging application iexplore.exe, version 8.0.6001.18702, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000
.

1. Turn off computer.
2 . Disconnect router / modem from power source for 1 minute.
3 . Reconnect everything.
4 . Restart computer.

5 . Go - Start > Run

6 . Type or, I prefer >> Copy / Paste << to be sure you get the correct spaces, these following commands, and hit Enter after each one:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

7 . Important - Reboot computer.

You may get a message at one time that says something like "Your Internet is Disconnected",
So I prefer to save the Commands in Notepad for quick referral -

After all this, could you post another MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.
Only checkmark the following boxes:

•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt).

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.
Last Job -
Go - Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup and you can tick all boxes > Click OK > Yes It may take from 2 to 5 minutes to finish
This cleans out a lot of unwanted Temp Files and Compresses old Required files -

Tell me if things are improving at all. since we started -

Thanks -

Things are MUCH better - thank you SO much! The Not Responding message is only appearing once or twice and doesn't last long. Before it was all the time and I had to keep closing everything.

I've still got a couple of things to complete that you mentioned in your later responses.

Do this for each harddrive that you have installed
Select > Start > My Computer
Now you will see the Icons for your local disks depending on the volume that you hace your operating system on which is normally on C:
You need to right click it and select Properties > select Tools
Then select in the Error checking section of the next window Check Now
Then in the next window select both boxs
A message will appear asking if you want to schedule the action to be performed at the next reboot
Select Yes > Then select OK
Then close out all windows & Reboot your computer -

Repeat these steps for each Hard Drive listed - You sem to have 2 listed (C and F)-
Drive c: () (Fixed) (Total:28.6 GB) (Free:9.01 GB) NTFS
Drive f: (New Volume) (Fixed) (Total:232.88 GB) (Free:227.42 GB) NTFS

This may take an hour or so per drive -

I'm still getting some of the previous things done. Do you want me to wait until everything else has been completed before doing this?

The new MiniToolBox can wait till after you do all other listed items, this is to see if any errors still show the same

Otherwise in the order as listed, because I am only looking at each of the errors as shown in the logs from the first ToolBox report -

Once you do the top items, I wanted to see what errors now show as being left over -

Thanks -
