Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
AMD Phenom II X4
nVidia GeForce GT 220
3GB RAM
750GB SATA drive
2TB SATA drive
1TB external USB drive
Lite On DVD burner (SATA)
Rosewill memory card reader (USB)

Computer randomly freezes and requires a hard shut down, usually about 3-4 times per day. I've checked the memory with the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool with no errors. I've tried formatting the hard drive, thinking that maybe there was some software installed that was causing the problem, but the problem continued after the fresh install with very few programs installed. I've monitored the CPU temperature and it never gets above 25C. One of my friends suggested that I have the power supply checked. The video card is newly replaced by the manufacturer, and usually if the video card is overheating, it will just shut the card down instead of freezing the computer. I've read that a few people have experienced the same problem but no one has seemed to have found a solution. I really feel like it's a hardware issue considering I've formatted the hard drive 3 times now and keep having the same issue come up. The computer is a custom build, 2 years old. The problem started about 1 month ago. It doesn't freeze every time I use it, but at least twice a day, often when I'm watching videos with Windows Media Player, but sometimes when I'm just browsing the Internet with Firefox. I have a performance report if that helps (using CPUID software).

**** End of log ****

There is no make and model of the computer as I built it myself. I currently have all external peripherals (except for keyboard/mouse) and 2GB of RAM disconnected and it's been running without a crash for about 30 minutes now. I should note that I earlier stated the computer had a 750GB main drive (it's actually 500GB) and there is 4GB of RAM installed, not 3.

UPDATE: The computer froze after I posted this. I switched out the 2GB stick of RAM and restarted.

UPDATE: Computer froze once again. This time only after about 8 minutes.

UPDATE: After reading another thread, I decided to try disabling the network card. The computer still froze, although it did take about 15 minutes this time.

There is no make and model of the computer as I built it myself. << This is why I asked for a Speccy Snapshot for more details -

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Thank You -

Try also running in safemode with networking. There may be a possibility of a PSU problem as memory tested good(?) prior and having 2 to 3 hard drives.

Hi Sean H,

It would be helpful to have a more detailed look at your hardware. As requested by noknojon in post #2, if you could please post a link to your Speccy Snapshot when you have a chance.

As recommended by jhayz, running in Safe Mode with Networking would be a good test. Freezes in Safe Mode with Networking would further implicate a hardware issue. Be careful while surfing as your anti-virus software may not be active.

Regards,
Brooks

May be a few answers and a few questions to go with them -

Your reports show that you are not up dated to Windows7 SP1 yet - Is there a reasom for this ??
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/install-windows-7-service-pack-1

It also shows Windows Defender activated, but no full Antivirus program is installed - Is there a reason for this ??
Below is from Microsoft who say to install an Antivirus program and how some work with Windows Defender -

Windows Defender alerts you when spyware attempts to install itself or to run on your computer. It also alerts you when programs attempt to change important Windows settings. We recommend that you install security software to help protect your computer from viruses and other security threats, and that you keep your security software up to date.

I would install Microsoft Security Essentials (free) Antivirus that includes Windows Defender as part of the program -
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=183489 << Direct install link

Please try to check the disk.
1. Click the Start, input cmd in the search bar.
2. Right-click cmd, run it as Administrator.
3. Input the command: chkdsk /r (Note the spce between k and / ) This my take 1 hour, so see how it runs -

Restart the computer then see if the problem is still there.
Next - Use the same method as above but type in sfc /scannow (note the space between c and / ) This may take about 15 mins -

Please check how much free disk space is available on the system volume in Windows Explorer.
Open Control Panel / System / Advanced System Settings.
Select the System Protection Tab.
In the Protection Settings box, select the System Drive (Usually C:)
Click the Configure Button.
In the Disk Space Usage section, use the slider to increase the amount of disk space allocated to System Restore.
Click > Apply > OK.

You can also use the Disk Cleanup tool to remove all but the latest System Restore Points. This will likely give you back a large amount of free disk space.
Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Select to clean up the files for All Users.
Reset one new restore point after this -

From Wiki, review / history - As of June 2008 update, the GT200 is the largest commercial GPU ever constructed.
The XFX GeForce GT 220 1GB graphics card is low-end desktop graphics card. Quoted from several reviews, all in about 2009, all about the same type of review -
http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gt_220_us.html <<< NVIDIA list it with their lower versions

http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/65100-random-freezing-crashing-nvidia-geforce-gt-220-a.html#post590395 << Link to Seven forums that discusses Freezing with your Graphics card back in early 2010 on windows 7 64-bit home premium -

This may be one of your main problems .... Try for an updated or better card -

I have not updated to Service Pack 1 because it took so dang long last time and, honestly, I thought that may have been what made the computer start freezing in the first place so I uninstalled the update.

Anytime I've gotten a virus in the past, it has been with an antivirus program installed so I just figured it was pointless to install anti-virus software. I will download both the Service Pack and Microsoft Security Essentials shortly.

I ran the "chkdsk" command and it returned a "clean" result in less than a minute.

I ran the "sfc" command and it returned "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I know the GT 220 is pretty low-end compared to what they manufacture now, but it runs all my basic applications and low-end games. I never had a problem with it until I tried to run Batman: Arkham City. It's pretty small and doesn't require an additional power cable. I recently had it replaced by the manufacturer (about 3 months ago).

Could the problem be that my PSU isn't powerful enough? I just read online yesterday that I should have a 600-700 watt PSU for the amount of devices I am powering. The one I have now is a 480.

>> I know the GT 220 is pretty low-end compared to what they manufacture now, but it runs all my basic applications and low-end games. I never had a problem with it until I tried to run Batman: Arkham City. << Your GT 220 will run most lower end (basic) games and still show some graphics as reasonable, but that is one reason I flagged LEGO® Batman™ 2: DC Super Heroes (Version: 1.0.0.0) as it is not handling it very well -

Also anything you download from BitTorrent (Version: 7.7.0) requires an Antivirus program to protect your system from infection.

I ran the "chkdsk" command and it returned a "clean" result in less than a minute. << This shows either a major fault somewhere or you did not reboot to do the scan, as it should not take (on average) less than 20 to 30 minutes to run the scan. Did all 5 stages fully complete and then reboot back to your normal screen ?? The quickest scan I have seen was over 15 minutes on a system with less installed and less problems than yours -
Try this method as the other one did not work - Run a Disk Check on your C: drive in Windows:
•Click Start and open Computer
Right-click on C: and select Properties
•Click on the Tools tab
•Under Error-checking click the Check Now... button
•Mark the boxes next to Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
•Click on the Start button
•When the message box pops up, click the Schedule disk check button and reboot your computer
•Once your computer restarts it will check the drive, don't press any keys or unplug the power so that it is allowed to do so
The screen will now look like Safe Mode, but once finished it will boot back to Normal mode -

Windows7 SP1 is now run as the basic system, like XP runs SP3 or Vista runs SP2 as a required setup now or you miss some M/soft updates -

Your PSU is rated at the absolute lowest end for operating your system (over 500 W output is preferred for Windows7) and about a 650Watt unit would be better for general use - I only used a 480 unit on my old XP with 1GB RAM installed .

Also did you read this post to you from jhayz about your PSU and to try Safe mode for a while ??

LEGO Batman 2 actually gave me no problems. It was Batman: Arkham City that ran very sluggishly. On previous builds, when a game ran slow, I upgraded the video card and problem was solved.

I didn't seem to have any problems in Safe Mode but I only let it run for about 5 minutes at a time.

Since I got home from work today and I've been performing the suggested steps with the disk checks and what-not, the computer hasn't frozen. I've updated to SP1, installed Windows Security Essentials, and temporarily uninstalled BitTorrent, Calibre, and Daemon Tools Lite.

I'm currently running the disk check with the most recently suggested method and it is on stage 4 of 5 (it never went through any stages with the first method, even after restart). I'll update once it's finished. I'm about to build a new computer for work and when I do, I'll order a new power supply for this one. I'll eventually update my graphics card as well, assuming there is nothing physically wrong with this build.

UPDATE: The disk check finished after about 90 minutes. The computer restarted but I have not seen any message pop up with any results.

UPDATE: The computer froze within 5 minutes of restarting after the disk check. The only program open was Firefox and Google Drive (on startup).

UPDATE: Computer just froze WHILE booting into safe mode. This is the first time it's frozen during boot.

UPDATE: After a hard reset, the computer restarted and initiated the disk check again (on its own).

No problem as that is what I expected - Keep running in Safe Mode with Networking (ask if you need help)

As an extra check, click on the link below (or transfer it via USB stick), and Copy / Paste the full result text
Check Test Click Run > Run > Continue and that result is the item I want to see here -

Thanks -
Computer just froze WHILE booting into safe mode. << F/fox sh0uld have been closed as you booted into Safe Mode -
EDIT - Looks like you are in or near Texas, must be getting a bit late there

The computer finished the initial disk check and booted into Windows normally. I opened up Firefox and was surfing when the computer froze again. That's when I did the hard reset and the disk check started all over again. I've noticed that if the computer freezes, when I restart it, any movement of desktop icons reverts to how they were before. I guess since it froze, it initialized the disk check when it booted back up again. *ugh* Normally it gives me the option of booting into Safe Mode after a hard reset so I didn't bother with F8.

I'm going to bed. I'll leave the computer on so that I don't interrupt the disk check and completely screw something up. I was going to try a different power supply by using one from work but I know the only spare one I have access to is probably 350w.
