UPDATE: I have been watching my Task Manager Processes all day and have determined that the spike is coming from explorer.exe. Every time it spikes I get lag. It will make my computer jump from 10% of the resources to 75 or 80%. Still no viruses detected. Does anyone have any idea on how to determine what is causes the explorer.exe to spike? I know it's a file that cannot be removed.

I'm going to start off by saying I know enough about computers to be dangerous. That being said, I'm to the point where I need some professional help. Up until about 6 months ago my computer ran like a dream. Then all of the sudden it started lagging during DC Universe Online which I have been playing since it first launched around 2 years ago. Shortly after games like Portal 2 and Unreal Tournament III began to lag even in offline mode. Now I can't even play Slender or the original Fallout without lag attacks! The lag isn't something I have ever experienced before. When the game lags on DC Universe Online or any other MMO I can still type and communicate, but the graphics are jerky to the point where I try to go forward and it goes backward or circular. I can still hear the animations and people say my character doesn't appear to be lagging in game. Same thing with the other games. It'll go jerky for about a minute or two. It happens about every 5-10 minutes like a clock with no lag in the "between" times.

Here is what I have done on my own so far to try and troubleshoot the issue:

1. My first thought was an out of date Nvidia driver. I checked and mine is up to date. I also checked the keyboard and mouse drivers...sound card....anything I could think of that may be out of date. Everything was good to go.
2. This led me to believe it was an Internet issue. Comcast came out and replaced a faulty splitter. The lag got a smidge better.
3. My next hunch was that it could be some kind of malware. I ran MALM and came up with nothing. I have run into Norton lagging games in the past with other computers, so I switched from Norton to McAffee. No real change, however, some things I discovered with McAffee led me to...
4. Every time Adobe would "ask permission" to use the Internet the computer would lag. I uninstalled all Adobe products. While I was at it I uninstalled all unnecessary programs and decided to run a full cleanup of the computer. After that I ran CC Cleaner to clean up the registries...nothing out of the norm. I also ran defrag. Then I reinstalled Adobe products (there are a lot...my husband is an animator so he pretty much has everything). All this gets me about 15 sometimes 20 minutes between lag spikes although the longer I play the more frequent they become until I have to just get off the game.

So now I'm kind of stumped. We clean the dust out of our computer about every 3-6 months as needed. I have tried repositioning a fan inside of the computer and that helped a little bit for a while. I was hoping for an affordable fix. I do understand this computer is getting "up there" in age, but we're not running anything that it can't handle or hasn't been able to run smoothly in the past. We have taken very good care of this computer and it runs better than my brand new Asus Essentio which has been nothing more than a brick since it came out of the box (I may as well paint the monitor blue because it's just one big BSOD). Sorry if there's something brainless I missed....I really hope you guys can help me out.

This...this is very, very weird. I appear to be having the exact same problem except for the fact mine has gotten so bad that the computer won't even start up normally. Right now I am typing in safe mode with networking and even this is slightly lagging. But I appear to have the same problems as you where my computer would usually have 60 fps but now has a baffling 10 fps; Even worse is the fact that now my comp doesn't even start correctly. By any chance did you notice any security alerts from your antivirus? (I didn't just wondering  )

EDIT: Odd, my computer seems to be working normally (with exception of framerate haven't tried it yet). Anyways try going into safe mode and changing your battery settings (for example mine worked when I put it from high performance back down to balanced and now it starts at least!)

Sorry to reply so late; I just saw this post. I have no security alerts. I even tried switching from Norton to McAffee to see if it would make a difference (it didn't). I ran Malm as well. Nothing. =/ I have noticed that explorer.exe no longer spikes, but I still get lag. I am at a loss. I can't even play simple games like Slender.

Well right now my comp is doing the same thing despite not seeing any problems in the past. I'm in the same spot as you in terms of what's going on, sorry but I can't help. The only suggestion that I've heard of (but i highly doubt it would work) is reinstalling the entire OS. It's possible a few bios files could be corrupted but i highly advise you do not do this unless you get better help. If I find a solution to both of our problems then I'll reply as soon as I can.

Again, sorry I couldn't help--Gilroy
