Hi,

First, I apologize for this post being so long.

I'm running windows XP w/Service Pack 3 and all critical updates.

I'm having a strange problem with text files.
The text I enter into the file gets mysteriously rearranged.

I was making a numbered list in notepad.

Like this (just as an example):

1. Text on the first line.

2. Text on the second line.

3. Text on the third line.

4. Text on the fourth line.

5. Text on the fifth line.

Nothing fancy just entering the info manually.
the list was numbered up to line 190.
I went back to look over the list and I noticed that
it was numbered wrong. Some numbers were skipped.
I just figured I misnumbered it but after I fixed the
numbering it kept happening.

I copied and pasted the list from notepad into another text editing
program and it kept happening in the other program too.
So to test it I wrote a few more lines to see if it would mess it
up again.

I wrote 5 more lines in the new program
(numbering here is just an example):

10. Text on the tenth line.

11. Text on the eleventh line.

12. Text on the twelfth line.

13. Text on the thirteenth line.

14. Text on the fourteenth line.

I left notepad open while I looked over to watch something on tv for
a few minutes and when I looked back at the computer the thing had
renumbered itself again. The last two lines had switched places and
were now both numbered the same number.

It looked like this:

10. Text on the tenth line.

11. Text on the Eleventh line.

12.Text on the twelfth line.

13. Text on the fourteenth line.

13. Text on the thirteenth line.

The actual information I had entered was still there and intact (I hope
it's all still there but there's to much of it to tell if anything was deleted.)
it was just rearranged and renumbered.

I don't think I have a virus. No suspicious processes are running at startup
or at all. Nothing strange has showed up in the program files or windows
directories that I can see.

This has me completely puzzled. Any help would be greatly apprecited.

Thanks,
Phil

Hi Phil -
The one thing missing is either a Screen shot or a Copy / Paste of how the text actually looks -
Has the above been done on the same computer, or another computer ???

It looked like this: << Is a bit hard to diagnose at times without seeing the problem that you mention -
Do a document and take a screen shot as soon as you finish ~ Let it sit for 5 minutes ~ Take another screen shot
You only need to enter silly text but it is a recorded text -

Thank You -

It's not that predictable unfortunatlely. I'm not sure if screenshots would really be useful in this case.
They would both just look like normal text files. The only difference between the two would be that the lines of text are rearranged.

The screenshots or a copy/paste really would look exactly like my examples above. Two screens with numbered lines of text but in the
second screen some of the lines of text would have switched positions and be renumbered. The text isn't garbled or corrupted in any way.

I did copy and paste the list into my html editor and didn't have any problems with the text being moved around there.

It's a very strange problem.

I'll try to get some screenshots though. I'll post them if I can get them.

Do you use any numbering technique, or do you just manually type this every time ??
There is a known problem related to the NUM Lock Key if it is turned on and off during the writing of a single text item -

I have reproduced this problem, and I never change the NUM Lock Key once I am about to start a document.
The numbers and, at times, the text lines would change during the writing of a document if this key is touched at all -

I needed to reboot the computer to stop this problem, and this was the only thing that fixed it - I also lost the text I was in the middle of -
This is my only recalled situation of what you describe -

Something for you to think about -

Spelling Edit only -

Hmm, this is interesting... Now that you mention it my keyboard has been a
little flaky lately and the NUM Lock Key does blink on and off now and then.
It never occurred to me that this could possibly rearrange the text in a text
file. I'm pretty dim sometimes.

I'll have to try a different keyboard and see if it sorts it out. Of course that
means i'll have to buy a new keyboard which could take a while but when I get one
I'll post and let you know if it works.

Hi Phil -
You are NOT dim, as I have just recently discovered this on another system in the last 2 weeks.
If I had not found this idea, I would have skipped over your post, and left it for someone else to try

Please list the Make and, if known, Model of this computer -

Regards -
