Referred from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic464447.html ~ OB

Not able to remove virus with MBAM (Malwarebytes), Rkill, TDSS..etc. Upon reboot the infected files reappear and it seems they are consistant in a constant change throughout my files. Hence, some infected files seem to remain while others look new or have changed in a way.

The actual fake scan that use to appear when rebooting has disappeared. However, I am still being redirected when using google search and/or a new window will open with some unidentified site that i did not initiate. Moreover, the computer will at times restart itself before I am able to efficiently use it such as to post here!

Important:

I can open up GMER and scan, but I am unable to check/tick the systems, sections, devices, modules etc. for scan. I can only check services, registry, files, C:\, and ADS. I will continue with the scan and post where I have been prompted. Just wonder why I am not able to check/tick the other options as shown in the prep guide's image?

Thank you for your help!!

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of hartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

Security Check

  • Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Combofix completed and the computer restarted and was processing the log, however, before it finished my computer restarted again.

Things that stayed the same were background ads (noise) and redirection of browser. I did notice that my firewall tried to block my router and asked permission for it to run and seems to be faster; that's a good sign.

Do I need to run combo fix again? I tried to look for the log in the combofix folder, but I am not sure what i am looking for or if it even exists,

Thank you,

Donna

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Hi Gringo,

It wouldn't let me run aswMBR (app wouldn't open) TDSSKiller ran, but said I needed an extended (monitoring?)driver for deeper scan and to reboot, so I did, and ran TDSSKiller again with the same response.

I ran both in safe mode with networking

Note: To access the internet I have to use the task manager to open the browser because even in safe mode I cannot see any desktop icons, or start options. Moreover, I have to access my desktop folder through the task manager as well.

Donna

Greetings

I need you to make a bootable usb and to make a screenshot for me - follow the instructions below to do this

How to create a bootable Puppy USB Drive

  • Download and save a copy of the latest Puppy ISO file
  • Download and save a copy of Unetbootin for Windows.
  • Insert an empty formatted USB drive into a USB port on the computer that's being used to create the bootable USB.
  • Launch Unetbootin ....
  • Ensure that Disk Image is selected.
  • Using the browse button ... browse to and select the Puppy ISO file.
  • Ensure that Type: is set to USB Drive and that the Drive: letter corresponds to the USB drive.
  • Click OK
Unetbootin will now copy the Puppy files to the USB and make it a bootable device.

Next

You need to change the boot order of the computer to boot from a USB drive ....

  • Read HERE for instructions how to do this.

Now boot into Puppylinux

when you get to the desktop Click on each of the drive items found in the bottom left corner to mount them (when mounted they will have a red cross next to them)

Next - Launch GParted which is found at Menu > System > GParted partition manager,
Click to select All Drives then click Okay
I need you to take a screenshot of the window that opens up - to do this follow these instructions

To take a screenshot in Puppy ....

With the GParted window open ...

  • Click menu > Graphic > mtPaint-snapshot screen capture
  • A small window will open ....

    • Click Capture Now
    • Click OK
  • The mtPaint program will open ....
    • Click File > Save
    • Double click on ../
    • Double click on mnt/
    • Double click on sdb1/
    • Set File Format to JPEG
    • Enter screenshot1 into the text box
    • Click OK

This will save a file screenshot1.jpeg into the USB drive, paste or attach this to your next post

Next

  • Click menu > shutdown > power off computer
  • If prompted to save the session click on No

Puppy will now close down.

remove the usb and save it - we will use it again - boot back into windows and send me the screen capture

Gringo,

I know it has been awhile, but I am back. I am having difficulty in understanding how to download the puppy iso file even after reading the instructions. Also can I download this file from a different computer onto a DVD+R...I also have a USB drive ready if needed. I think I have downloaded the "precise" file but I am unable to create a flashdrive (F:) on my computer because it is not detecting such a drive. However, if I go into computer management I can see the F: drive, but there is no way to access it.

The infected computer will not display desktop or start menu. I have to use the task manager to access a browser. Moreover, I am only able to access the task manager and browser the safe mode with networking using the administrator account.

Than you for your time,

Donna
