Try a different burn program...to further define the problem.

Hard to say, since you provided no onscreen error messages received.

hi caperjac
i did contact the repair shop.
he said that it was probably the eye in the laser and that i would need to change the drive.

my problem with that is that even though this computer is now 7 years old. it has been in storage for 5 years and in the 2 years we have had it set up it has hardly been used.
so i hope that it is just a clitch and not a fault with the drive that has hardly had any use
thank you

As suggested in the link I posted...the possibility of hardware problems with your opti9cal drive...seems to be the obvious conclusion if a different drive has no problem burning.

Optical drives are available for less than $20 these days.

You may want to try MS Fixit, Optical Drives - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116 , just for the sake of exhausting another alternative that may confirm/refute the suspicion of faulty hardware.

7 years old. it has been in storage for 5 years and in the 2 years

if that's the case, it maybe a dirty laser eye ,try a long q-tip and alcohol to clean it

My answers are my opinion only, usually

One other possibility is that the 7 year old drive does not like the new discs. At the cost of a DVD burner these days it might almost pay to change the drive.

Good Luck

thank you for the advice on changing the drive
and for taking the time to respond to this posts
i was unaware that an opitcal drive is as little as 20 dollars.
it may well be the discs as well as last night i retried burning using nero and it burned to disc fine.

maybe it is on its way out and may work now and then.
time to change i think
thanks guys once again this website has been of great help to a mere novice
cheers
william
