Hello to the Bleeping Computer Crew:

I am trying to get this darn PC working again fully. I have had problems with the Winfixer pop ups and just need some help. I have been fiddling with this problem for almost a week and I am at my wit's end.

I run Windows XP Pro SP2, and I have the Norton Internet Security Program. Previously this week, when I would be running my Spyware Doctor v.3.5 or so, it would always make it through the scan until it was about 75% done. This occured right around the ActiveX Control scan. Either it would just reboot itself, it would go to the dredded Blue Screen saying that I had an unknown device driver, or it would just plain lock up and only the cursor would work. CTRL-ALT-DEL wouldn't even work. Please help!

Here is my HijackThis Logfile as required:

Hello LT Dan 74 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. Let's try a different scanner and see what it shows us. Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.

Just out of curiosity, but exactly how long is this scan supposed to run?... I started it last night, and it still was scanning on the MEMORY.DMP just like it was when I left it last night. This has happened a few times previously and I cancelled it because I restarted the scan.

Hi LT Dan 74. Delete any of the memory.dmp files if they are present. They are just left over from a system crash and can only be used by MS engineers.

Cheers.

Sorry about that... I just left it running while I went to work... and when I got back, it was done scanning.

Here it is:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi LT Dan 74. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

There are a few cleanup items that should be taken care of so let's do that while you are here.

We need to disable TeaTimer so it soes not interfere with the changes we are going to make.
  • Start Spybot-S&D.
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected.
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools and then click on Resident.
  • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and choose OK for any furhter prompts.
  • Restart your computer.
Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BD6CD737-34E1-4864-8697-83EC081F1989} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP
Note: If you receive any error messages while trying to delete any of the above files/folders then reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete them again. See the instructions below on how to boot into Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Ok, reboot normally and re-enable TeaTimer. Try the Spyware Doctor scan again and see if you still get the error.Let me know what happens.

Cheers.
