My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite. I've only had it for about a year, and it keeps having problems. I am sending it for repairs soon, but I'd like to know if there is anyway I could fix the problems. I have Norton Anti-virus. It has worked for quite a while, but now, it is just unusable.
These problems are:
-on start up, the computer will allow me to log in, but once it gets to the desktop, I cannot load any programs.
-it runs very slowly with everything (right now, I can only open the start menu and such)
-it overheats

I am currently running it in safe mode with a malware search going. I'd like to know if there is anything I can do.
Any help is appreciated. =)

not sure if you need to send it away for repairs ,i will address the overheating and say purchase a can of compressed air and blow out fan and heatsinc for starters ,
then i would post in the am i infected section ,for the other problems sound virus/trojan related, good luck

Well, I know that the overheating is from the computer itself. A pop up comes up sometimes that says "There is a problem with the cooling system. Please send your computer back to the manufacturer for repairs."
I have once, but they insisted that there was nothing wrong. My warranty with Toshiba has run out, but I have another warranty with another company.

But, thank you. I will post my problem in the section you linked.

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.

Oh, sorry. I didn't realize it needed to be like that. I thought I was doing you a favor, but never mind.

I edited my previous post instead if that's okay...? If not, I'll post them again.

Please download the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.

There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/beta/rkill.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/beta/iExplore.exe

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

I don't see anything malicious but it looks like your Windows installation is having some problems.
in FSS log I can see number of vital services not running.

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install the program then run

Go to step 2 and allow it to run Disc check

Posted Image

Once that is done then go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC

Posted Image

On the the Start Repairs tab click Start button.

Please ensure that items seen in the image below are ticked as indicated:

Click on box next to the Restart System when Finished. Then click on Start

Post new FSS log.

I'm not sure what's going on there.
Either there is some infection I can't see with tools allowed in this forum or your Windows installation is really messed up.

What you can try is some more advanced checks...

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Hello,

Now that you have posted a log here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic464343.html you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a MRT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the MRT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the MRT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the MRT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MRT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

Please be patient. It may take several days to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible. I advise checking your topic once a day for responses as the e-mail notification system is unreliable.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.

Help us help you. If HelpBot replies, you MUST follow step 1 in its reply so we know you need help.
