Hello All,

First of all I did read the stickies but am not terribly computer literate and was unable to get a screenshot although I tried to follow the instructions in wikihow. Sorry for that.

I am using as my operating system Windows 7 Home Premium. My antivirus software is McAfee Antivirus Plus.

All of this started when I visited a website called www.tubeplus.me, which is a clearly dangerous site where one can watch TV for free. I knew not to download anything from the site, but when it told me that I had to download something called codec on my first time in order to watch any videos I foolishly believed it was really an update I needed in order to watch anything and downloaded it. That's when the troubles began.

The troubles consist firstly of intrusive advertisements. Random words will be highlighted in anything that I read as though they are a link to something real but when I click on them I am taken to an advertisement (for facebook, for example). If I try to watch anything on netflix the screen in which the video is actually playing is pushed down by a pop-up advertisement for something random (Mitt Romney's campaign, for example), and the ad cannot be closed. The ad also says in the lower right hand corner "ads not from this site." This type of ad is present on other websites as well, but is not as intrusive as it is in Netflix because in the case of Netflix I'm actually prevented from seeing the entire screen. Finally and most worryingly, I got a warning message from World of Warcraft recently telling me my account was showing irregularities and needed to be reset. I haven't reset it yet because I feel like there must be a trojan or something on the computer that will just ferret out my password again.

In terms of steps taken I removed anything called codec in my control panel, and then ran a full scan with my antivurus software but found nothing. The problems continue.

I really appreciate this forum and all the people on it.

Bests,

Carl

The log for aswMBR is missing because when I tried to complete the scan (I tried twice) I got a blue screen telling me my computer was being shut down in order to protect it. When the computer restarted microsoft furnished the following error report:

I asked windows to search for a solution to the problem, but it (the intelligence in my computer) just searched for a moment and then disappeared. Fantastic.

Thanks again,

Looks clean.

How is computer doing?

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

Hey Broni,

Sorry to be MIA but I was traveling, and then was back for two days, and then traveling again, so, am now back with the computer and ran the scans your suggested. Unfortunately I accidentally closed the ESET window before I could record the log, but it reported I know 23 infected files found and cleaned.

The computer is doing much better. I realized that the ads were in the browsers themselves, so I uninstalled and reinstalled firefox and chrome and they've been fine. I do have another problem where the whole computer periodically slows down, like it's going in slow motion, whenever I stream a movie, or music, or use the video card like in computer games, but that problem has been going on longer so I guess I should open a different thread for it.

Thanks again!

Yeah, that would be a subject to Windows forum.

Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions (if present).
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

10. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

11. Except for MBAM and TFC, which are keepers you can simply delete all other tools we used as they don't install.
