Operating system: Windows XP Professional

I have Network Magic which keeps up with when security updates are needed. It's been telling me that my firewall is turned off and that AntiVirus is not installed. I have McAfee Security Center as well as McAfee Security Scan Plus the latter of which says the same thing. When I went to turn on the firewall (I usually have it on) I received this error:

"due to an unidentified problem, windows cannot display firewall settings"

Thinking that I could fix the problem by googling the error message I tried various things that was suggested on help sites. I ran Malware Bytes figuring that would fix things with a full scan and while it did find some issues and they were taken care of I still had the same error message so I found this site:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/sharedaccess.htm

and followed the directions

I now get this message when I try to turn the firewall on:

Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?

If I click yes I get this:

Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service

Network Magic and McAfee Security Scan is still telling the problem is there. And I'm wishing I had come here when the problem first started. *head desk* lol

Keep in mind that your McAfee includes a firewall so Windows firewall should be OFF, but let's see what's wrong with its settings.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner Download Link and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:

    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Please take the time to read the description of the McAfee programs that you mention -
Do you actually run a program that has an Antivirus and Firewall together, since both McAfee programs, and Network Magic are neither of these -
McAfee | Security Scan Plus << described here -
McAfee Security Scan Plus, and its predecessor McAfee Security Scan, are free diagnostic tools for your PC that allows you to simply and easily check your anti-virus software, and your firewall protection

The McAfee SecurityCenter interface allows current subscribers to dynamically access, manage, and configure their security software programs. .
Most McAfee SecurityCenter builds offer trial subscriptions to McAfee’s security software, including McAfeeŽ VirusScanŽ, McAfeeŽ Personal Firewall Plus, McAfeeŽ Privacy Service, and McAfeeŽ SpamKillerŽ.

Please list your Antivirus / Antimalware program(s), as you may have a firewall included in there -

Thank You -

You have some registry keys missing.
Before we fix them we have to make sure your computer is clean.

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

Please download the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.

There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/beta/rkill.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/beta/iExplore.exe

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

OK, at this point your computer looks clean.
You have number of registry keys missing though.

Before we go there.

Thanks to "noknojon" sharp eye (thanks :)).
He turned my attention to the fact that you're not running any AV program.
Both, McAfee Security Center and McAfee Security Scan Plus are simply a foistware and should be uninstalled.

Then...
Install ONE of these:
- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- free Microsoft Security Essentials: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials
- free Comodo Antivirus: http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/antivirus.php
Update, run full scan, report on any findings.

Let me know when done and we'll fix your registry issues.

The Security Center is supported by my provider and has always picked up any viruses that have tried to load themselves. It's actually caught a few trojans. Information about it can be found here: http://ww2.cox.com/residential/arizona/internet/cox-security-suite.cox Would it still be considered to not be an AV program?

In that case you're OK.

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install the program then run

Go to step 2 and allow it to run Disc check

Posted Image

Once that is done then go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC

On the the Start Repairs tab click Start button.

We still have couple of keys missing.

Following steps involve registry editing. Please create new restore point before proceeding!!!
How to:
XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948247
Vista and Seven - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/create-a-restore-point-for-windows-vistas-system-restore/

Download following registry keys:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/win-services/xp/Dnscache.reg
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/win-services/xp/Netman.reg
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/win-services/xp/EventSystem.reg

Double click on each of downloaded files and confirm the prompt.
Restart computer.
Post new FSS log.
