Hi,
I just discovered after switching my computer on today that Google Chrome didn't seem to work. File Hippo's update checker (which I've been using for quite a while) notified me of a new update, so I clicked show. This is supposed to open my default web browser (Chrome) with my update list. Instead, I got an endless loading page. I tried Google.ie, nothing. New tab, nothing. I promptly opened up Opera and Googled this problem. I found someone else with this too. I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and ran a quick scan. It found two entries of pup.hijck.startmenu on my computer. I removed them, but I am still having this problem with Chrome. I was hoping the experts here could inform me of any programs to run like HijackThis, etc. to see if there are any infections remaining and to see why this problem may be still remaining.
My computer is an old iQon laptop (Irish brand) running Windows XP SP3. Virus protection is Avast Free (please note Avast did not detect this, and I did not try running a scan with this as of yet as I wanted expert advice). Chrome is the latest Chrome beta.

I also found some info online about removing this virus etc, but I wanted some personal advice.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Barry C

Hi Broni,

Thanks for replying. Although while I was waiting I Googled that virus a bit and found it was just a potentially unwanted modification and resulted in me purposely disabling the search in the start menu. After running CCleaner then to clear Chrome's internet cache, it seemed to work fine then. Will I still post the logs etc. for good measure and to ensure there was no hidden virus?

Thanks,

Barry C

Did you disable system restore for whatever reason?
If you did be sure to turn it back on.
