I am running Window Vista Home Basic

I realized I had the Google Redirect virus and attempted several help manuals.
I believe I have it cleaned up now after several scans from Hitman Pro, and Malwarebytes show no more signs.

I went to turn my firewall back on and it says "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display firewall settings."

I have tried to follow several help postings online, but none of them seem to fit my experience with the google redirect virus or Windows Vista.

Please download the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.

There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/beta/rkill.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/beta/iExplore.exe

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

It looks clean by now.

You have several registry keys missing though...

Following steps involve registry editing. Please create new restore point before proceeding!!!
How to:
XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948247
Vista and Seven - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/create-a-restore-point-for-windows-vistas-system-restore/

Download Vista.zip file from here: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/files/download/9-registry-network-keys/
Unzip the file.
You'll find several files inside.

Double click on windefend.reg file and confirm the prompt.
Double click on bits.reg file and confirm the prompt.
Double click on wuauserv.reg file and confirm the prompt.
Double click on wscsvc.reg file and confirm the prompt.
Double click on bfe.reg file and confirm the prompt.
Double click on mpssvc.reg file and confirm the prompt.

Restart computer.

Post new FSS log.

**** End of log ****

I assumed that FSS was Farbar Service Scanner.

I tried the Firewall (just curious) and it says it cannot be displayed because the associated service isn't running. It then asks me if I want to start it and I clicked YES. Then it says it cannot start Windows Firewall Service.

I really appreciate all of your help. I wouldn't have been able to do this on my own.

Download following firewall fix: http://www.bleepstatic.com/fhost/uploads/0/repairw7fw.bat
Right click on downloaded file, click "Run As Administrator".
Restart computer and post new FSS log.

Not good.

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install the program then run

Go to step 2 and allow it to run Disc check

Once that is done then go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC

It works great!

I really appreciate your help. You rock man!

I wish there was some way for me to help you with my expertise. Unfortunately, there isn't much an elementary educator can do for somebody across the globe. I gave you much deserved donation and please know that each year at our school there are several needy kids that people take up donations for. This year I will throw in a matching donation in your honor as a way of paying it forward. Know that your positive action will continue on.

You ROCK!

From what I could see there was no way to create a log. It just asked me if I wanted to quarentine the files (I checked that box) and/or uninstall files.

When I clicked finish, it just gave me the option of purchase or 30-day trial.

I have run it twice since and there have been no other threats detected.
