I have an icon in bottom right flashing with a "!" tells me "System Alert" "Spyware/Malware" 4 detected. When opening IE it doesn't open my homepage but some Online Virus thing. 2 icons on the desktop and in the menu. I think i've had this thing before and was a pain to get rid of.

The log:

Thanks. I'm sure i've had this before, i think there was a bit of digging involved.when i run spybot it won't remove "PestTrap", SmitFraud-C" and "Vcodec". i was on a site for music video clips i'm not sure exactly what it did but it updated Windows Media Player to play the clip so i suppose it installed a codec as well as this other thing. But in your time as you will no more than me. THanks.

It pops up ads. Won't open my Google home page, just some online thing. Ewido scanner wouldn't remove 2 from the 6 it found 1 being HKLM\SOFTW...\CLASSES\CLSID\C4Da4616D-7EGE-4F09-A2D5-B6C535 - IT WAS ADWARE.ENRIC - MEDIUM RISK.

just if that helps. i'm not sure what the other wone was.

Hi and welcome Izzy!

*It is a good idea to print off these instructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
It is important that you complete the following instructions in the correct order, and also that you don't miss anything out!

You are using BearShare. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use "Add/Remove Program" to remove it and any reference to BearShare.
This is another article: http://www.cexx.org/adware.htm

Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.
Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
*Now start a new scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items (if present):

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpB68D.tmp

* Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed and click on "Fix Checked" and exit HijackThis when finished.

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvctrl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssearchnet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpB68D.tmp

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into normal Windows and click this Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Hello Izzy

This is looking much better - the infection is now gone! We just have a few more things to clear up! The following file we are about to cover in more detail is from the Adware/SearchExe family.

Then, please tell me if you know anything about this folder:

C:\Program Files\backups

I imagine you didn't put it there yourself, but i want to be sure i know what we are deleting before doing so. If you have anything in there you need also let me know. I just want to confirm that folder's status before deleting it:

Open notepad and copy and paste next in it:

dir "C:\Program Files\backups" > look.txt
start look.txt

Save this as look.bat
Choose to save as all files.
This is how the batch must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick look.bat and copy the contents of the text file that opens back here.

Please post back with a Panda log, a new Hijackthis log and also tell me how the computer is running.
David

Computer seems to be ok (i won't say 100% because the machine itself is a bit slow) but seems to be good as normal. The C:Program File/backup i know nothing about i noticed that panda found 1 of 3 files inside a spyware.

Hello Izzy

There was a small error in the last batch i gave you which meant that i did not get the results i was looking for. Now, please open notepad and copy and paste next in it:

dir "C:\Program Files\backups\*.*" /s > look.txt
start look.txt

Save this as look.bat
Choose to save as all files.
This is how the batch must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick look.bat and copy the contents of the text file that opens back here.

Hi Izzy

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\Program Files\backups <-folder

How is the computer running? I think you said everything was ok, but just to confirm with you. Can you please post back with a final HijackThis log and a new Panda log.

David

Computer seems to be fine. My McAfee found this file: C:\SystemRestoreInformation\_Restore{1281b25f-407d-4bdc} was infected with the PUPER Trojan. It said that it removed and deleted the file.
Also this file:
C:\RECYCLER]S-1-5-21-1454471165-329068152-839522115-1004/...
was found as a PUPER.DLL it said that was removed and deleted also but that is the 2nd that was PUPER.

Hey Izzy!

McAfee is throwing up some standard files which can be easily removed. The C:\RECYCLER is actually just your recycle bin, so you can delete the contents of that. The C:\SystemRestoreInformation files are just infected system restore points that will be purged when you follow my all-clean steps below:

Now that you are clean, lets reset your system restore points please follow these simple steps in order
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Clickthe System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer
  • Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Hide System Files
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • SelectTools menu
  • Click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Uncheck Show hidden files and foldersin the Hidden files and folders section.
  • Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Check the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
  • Click Yes.
  • Click OK.
Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs: hide
Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
I would recommend Grisofts© AVG or AVAST©. As these are the more secure and better ones.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
I would recommend ZoneAlarm© as a firewall as it's easy to use. But for a more secure firewall, Sunbelts Kerio© is the one.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly
  • Install Spybot© - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Lavasofts© Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here: Click here for more info -->Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If you have any addition questions just ask...
David
