I have an old Dell Inspirion 2200 laptop. When I turn the laptop on it will show the windows logo, that its booting up then it goes to black. It is so dark even a light shining on it does no good. If I hook it up to an external monitor it does work just fine. Some times the screen stays lit though and I can do things on it some times it works just fine but those times are far and inbetween because 9 times out of 10 if I turn off the laptop and try to get the screen to stay on it doesn't.

I have a few questions though, if the computer isn't getting enough power from the battery will that make the screen not light up? because when I stick the charger in to keep the laptop plugged it the little battery icon sometimes flickers away and I have to adjust the cord to get it back which tells me that the charger might be bad but also the fan on the laptop doesn't blow which also makes me wonder if theres not enough power.

I know I'll probably have to replace the screen if the power thing is not the issue but I've looked on ebay a few times and they just comfuse me.

Hello,

The description of your monitor situation sounds like a inverter is going out. You can still go to external monitor but that will kind of hold you back in the long run

Depending on your Power Options it might. It on Balanced by default if you have it on High Performance it will. The battery will use more power on that mode. When you have the laptop charging the LED is always lit. Yes you are correct if the battery adapter has to be adjusted the adapter has a short in it. The only way to replace the adapter would be find a replacement of the exact cord and wattage requirement in/out. Usually on the adapter it has a model number printed on the face

Battery do attend to ware out If your battery isn't holding a charge it could the battery. this ties into the power options too

Hope this helps

Hi, What is the service tag off of the bottom of the laptop? If that is worn off, try going into the bios it will usually tell you there at the top of the screen.

OK, that laptop can be a 14.1" or 15" screen. Measure diagonally and then go to Google and put Inspirion 2200 xx" screen ebay or amazon (Two searches) and see what that shows. Don't buy of course. I can probably pull up the exact part number by using the service tag information. This isn't a very fast laptop, what is your maximum budget for the repair?

Thanks
Roger

the service tag is 5SSR581
I know its not a fast machine seeing as its over 7 years old. All I really want is to see if I can get maybe a new charger (since i think it is malfunctioning) and a new screen. I'm not sure how much I am willing to spend right now seeing as I dont really know what the screens or chargers go for but I'd like to say not over 100 bucks if possible.

The AC Adapter shows as ADAPTER..., ALTERNATING CURRENT..., 60W, 19V, 1K, WORLD WIDE...

The Screen shows as LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 14.1 XGA..., STANDARD PANEL WORK GROUP B..., SAMSUNG...

The Service manual is here.

Using this in Inspirion 2200 14.1 screen Google brought up prices $60 and up for the screen.

Google with this Inspirion 2200 Ac brought up cheap AC Adapters.

Keep in mind that the screen does not include the plastic housing.

Good Luck
Roger
