I have installed a fresh version of windows XP on my mothers computer.
When I try to install windows service packs or internet explorer I get the same error message:

The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll

Does any one know what I need to do to fix this problem.

Thanks.

Please download MiniToolBox , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792

FWIW: Internet Explorer is installed as part of Windows. If you mean that you are trying to update the version of IE to a later version, that's a different problem.

Thanks :), don't worry about that right now.

System manufacturer and model...of this computer?

Did you use a Genuine MS XP CD to do the install...recovery disks provided by the system manufacturer...or any other possibility?

First thing I suggest...download to the system and install from the desktop: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24 . Ignore anything that says to use Windows Update...just click the red button and save the file to your desktop. Then install it from the desktop.

Tell us how that goes.

FWIW: HP disks...are recovery/restore disks...designed for a specific HP system. They are not designed to be installed on anything but HP systems, they contain/reflect all the HP software and drivers for that system.

I suspect that's the cause of your problems.

The install went just like it should. The automatic updates are now working properly, along with her new printer and internet explorer.
I figured that when I went to use the HP disk that it would not work at all and was surprised that it seemed to install properly, it was the only XP disk I had that's why I tried it first rather than buy a Dell disk.
What was different with the download you gave me from the ones I was trying, it seems to have fixed all the problems the computer was having.
Thanks again for your help, my mother is very pleased.
