First off, please know that I am an IT professional... Please don't baby me with your instructions or templates... it annoys me.

AVG, and MBAM scans in progress - logs will be posted when complete.

Gotta love rogue ware. On July 19, I was working on a paper for one of my classes, when out of nowhere came a stack of about 50 notification boxes telling me my hard disk was failing with some odd error (can't remember exactly). I thought "Well, thanks Windows, but why couldn't you have told me this 3 months ago when my drive actually crashed!" Then, I saw a typo, and immediately head desked. I went though the normal procedures to remove the infection (RKilled, manually deleted files/registry keys associated with the infection (more specifically, shredded so they would be unrecoverable), etc.) and several hours later MBAM, AVG, and TDSS all reported no infection, and all the symptoms were gone.

Today (about an hour ago), the same thing came back. I have already run RKill, manually deleted the files, and reg keys. MBAM just completed as clean, but, AVG has me concerned.

Right now, AVG shows 4 infected files:
C:\Users\[Redacted]\AppData\Local\{[Random string redected]}\n - BackDoor.Generic15.BHGZ
C:\Windows\Explorer.exe (2920) - BackDoor.Generic15.BHGZ
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe (3520):\memory_00b20000 - Luhe.Sirefef.A
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe (3520) - Luhe.Sirefef.A

Every now and then, my Firefox will attempt to open (not touching the computer except to keep the screen saver off), but there's already a crashed firefox.exe process, so it won't start (and leaving it that way just in case).

Further, every 20-30 minutes, AVG Resident Shield detects C:\Windows\System32\services.exe on open as Trojan horse Dropper.Generic_c.MMI.

Computer is currently disconnected from the internet.

Knowing there is a backdoor, I've already changed passwords on *ALL* sites I accessed since I got this comptuer, my email, my banking, etc. Not sure the computer can be trusted again in the future, so I may just run DBAN and start over. Which, kind of sucks. I'm looking to see if I have any recoverable data, and if I have any desire to recover it.

Also, on a side note, since the original issue, my DRM has been screwed up and I can't download, play, or stream any of my Zune Music Pass tracks.

It'd be nice to save the comp if at all possible, but I seriously doubt it's savable, and even if so, I doubt I'll trust it for anything sensitive... Priority though would be to clean it enough where I can save data, and get through the welcome week events at work (week after next) if at all possible.

Thanks in advance!

GMR did not return anything in the Rootkit/Malware scan

Forgot to include this: DDS log taken AFTER AVG removed threats and rebooted. GMER returns no result. Only threat not resolved is Services.EXE infected with Dropper.Generic_c.MMI.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/463767 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you should not bother creating a GMER log.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!
