My PC HP Pavillion DV5 notebook.
inter ® core ™ i3 CPU M330 @ 2.13 ghz
Installed memory (RAM) 3.00 GB (2.86 usable)
64 bit operating system.

I have reduced start up programs to minimum and offloaded all big files to external hard disk to free of space, but when I use the internet, the pc just seems to slow down until it completely stops.
on many occasions it automatically shuts down due to over heating, I have a fan pad (under the laptop) to keep the heat down but still makes no difference, I have also updated the BIOS settings and set the internal fan to work all the time.
Is this a virus ? or just a crap laptop ?

I have installed bit defender and also regularly run clean up! to remove temp files.

Any help really appreciated

Many thanks.

Does the laptop overheat...when you are not using the browser? How do you know that it's overheating, since I know of no system that advises of such?

Have you tried resetting the browser to defaults...to overcome the slowness?

Was Bit Defender installed before the problems began...or after?

Please download MiniToolBox , save it to your desktop and run it.

This HP Page is devoted to reducing overheating in a HP laptop.
Also as the computer is overheating the computer will become slower and slower as the CPU speed is reduced to try and alleviate the overheat condition. Quite often the computer will shut off to prevent damage. I do suggest you get the overheating looked into as continued running hot is shortening the computer life.

When it is slowing down what does Task manager show for CPU & memory usage? CTRL + ALT + DEL keys and select task manager.

A cooling pad under a laptop has two benefits:
It ensures that the laptop is on a hard surface to prevent blocking the air intake on the bottom.
It brings air in a higher volume.
It will not be very helpful if the heatsink fins are blocked by a dust buildup.

Please follow Louis's requests too.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01657439&tmp_track_link=ot_recdoc/c00292159/en_us/c01657439/loc:1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us
Symptoms of heat issues and causes of excessive heat
The following list describes some of the issues caused by too much heat in the computer:

Games stop responding during play.
Windows stops responding during use.
Fans inside the computer become louder because they are spinning faster to remove the heat.
When starting the computer, it sometimes stops at a black screen and does not open into Windows. Windows usually stops responding when it does open.
Mouse and keyboard stop responding.
Windows 7, Vista, XP - Computer unexpectedly restarts or displays a blue fault message.
Windows 95, 98, and Me - Frequent Fatal Exception, Illegal Operation, or General Protection Fault error messages occur in several software programs.

Step 1: Remove dust and lint by cleaning vents
Notebook PCs have vents located around the case to allow air to flow through the case. If these vents become clogged or heat generating parts become covered with dust, the fan cannot cool the components properly. Lint and dust accumulation prevents air from flowing around the cooling fins and causes the fan to work harder. If there is dust in the vents, you should clean the computer by blowing out the dust from around the fan and heat shield. This prevents dust from accumulating.

Hello puertorico,

I've had both your noted issues over the last month, FF and over heating, but on two different systems.

Firefox, on my Linux OS, did the same thing to me on one of my systems. The RAM usage would grow to 99%, and possibly the swap as well...don't recall, and then everything would freeze and even reboot if I left it to see what was wrong and if it would release.

After a few days of this occurring randomly, no time to see a pattern but I think I was downloading on the occasions this happened, an update for Firefox was released and I don't think it's happened since.

A second system that belongs to family was DOA. A laptop with specs a bit higher than yours. It would boot but to a black, dead, screen. Internet searches had little feedback but more than a few had the same issue but no solution. External ports for video failed as well. After opening the system I found that the thermal compound, heat-sink past, was dried out and powdery when touched. The CPU and GPU are upside down on this laptop BTW.

Replacing the paste and letting the system over heat once again with the GPU facing up for a minute or two and then fully cooling resolved the problem, but only for a few weeks. My son installed a very graphic intense game to do burn-in testing for me and after an hour or two the system froze, shut down, and is back to starting up and then crashing. (I believe the solder points on the GPU are poor again just like an Xbox360 with the red ring of death (RROD) issue.)

I'm not saying you have the same issues...or that you should apply any of my steps, other than trying a new version of FF or a different browser for a while, but if the system keeps over heating you might be in the same boat.

I was given the laptop with the expectation that if it wasn't fixable quick and easy it was mine for parts or garbage. So I had nothing to lose but you do.

After replacing the browser, export your bookmarks first!, try something like a game or movie that will tax the GPU more than normal. In Linux I have tools running that show me what's being utilized and how much RAM/SWAP is being used.

You might also consider the site/sites your going to when you surf. Is it always the same one that causes the issue or random?

Just a few ideas and things to note. Get back to us none of this helps or it resolves your problem, but don't let the system overheat to often or your going to run into my issues.

Good luck,
Zen

That would be a personal opinion. I like Firefox/Iceweasel just fine. While others here stick to Google's Chrome. The point is to just TRY something different to see if the results are the same.

The easiest to try is Internet Explorer since it is most likely there, excluding the EU, and doesn't need to be installed.

I use it and FireFox.

Wow, thanks guys for all your responses, I will certainly look at all the ideas and solutions recommended, but I have already updated firefox, exporting the bookmarks and have exactly the same problem on both IE and Google Chrome, both of which I deleted in an attempt to avoid, I am already using the fan system under my laptop.
I will post the report ASAP.

Thanks

If the fan is racing and the air coming out is not high volume and what is coming out is very hot then the heatsink needs cleaning.

As I mentioned if the heatsink is clogged then a fan under the laptop won't help.

Additional note, no it does not overheat during offline use, usually facebook apps that cause the problem, but even after closing the browser, the whole system runs at snail pace and it is impossible to continue without clearing the cache and rebooting, and that only does the trick occasionally.
Bit defender was installed basically from new and I have not faced problems with it, nor do I suspect it is related, but then again, I am not the expert here !

I assume by this you mean java/flash games or apps?

If you have the task manager open set to show all running services are you able to see what loads when you start FF and start a typical surf session? If you close FF early, before it get's to bad to use the system, do you notice anything staying open and running?

Are you able to surf to say BC, MS, and other known to be safe sites without the issue?

Prior to you noticing this problem what software or hardware additions/changes have been made?

If I stay away from flash/java apps, it doesn't happen, but apart from regularly updating Java nothing has changed, apart from this now constant slow down to stop of graphics which drags the whole operating system to a crawl.

I had thought it might be heat related causing the processor to reduce output to counteract the heat.

Any ideas ?

As a note of interest I have a second laptop, which works fine on exactly the same apps, as this one used to before.
