(this is continued from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic462534.html/page__gopid__2787134#entry2787134)

So, I've been experiencing very slow download speeds and other strange behavior. SAS and FixTDSS will not run. MBAM frequently has difficulty updating (and says that I have more than 4 billion days in my free trial  ) Often, downloaded files refuse to run or unzip, saying that they are corrupted.

You will notice that I created a restore point called "Combofix." I did NOT run Combofix, so no worries.

Crashed to BSOD yesterday.

DDS logs attached. GMER won't run (64bit system).

Mysteries abound.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/463373 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you should not bother creating a GMER log.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello there,

Here is a recap of problems:

- Inordinately slow download speeds. This PC is in a small office, so it's clear that the problem is specific to this computer.
- Frequent inability to update MBAM, though it sometimes succeeds on its own. MBAM also just behaves strangely in general. I installed the full trial version, which expired the next time I started up the computer. The icon on the taskbar is grey, as though it's inactive, yet it seems to indicate that I have more than 4 billion days (!) remaining in the trial.
- Inability to update Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.
- Many updates and zipped downloads will not run/unzip. Corrupt data error message.
- Cannot unzip/run TDSSKiller. WinRAR Diagnostic message: "CRC Failed in TDSSKiller.exe. The file is corrupt."
- SUPERAntiSpyware and FixTDSS don't do anything at all. No error message, no cursor "gestures."
- Recent BSOD. Non-recurring, perhaps not related.

Here are my specs:

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Download this tool for your operating system.
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (64 bit)
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (32 bit)
and save it to a flash drive. <- Important - use a good computer for this download.

Plug the flash drive into the infected PC.

Restart your computer and tap F8 to bring up the Advanced Menu, then click Repair your computer

Follow the prompt to enter keyboard input method, and then the prompt to enter a password. If the machine does not have a password, simply click Enter.

In the next menu, use the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Command Prompt and press Enter.
  • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type e:\frst64.exe and press Enter. Or FRST.exe if 32 bit system.

Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.

  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
===

I suggest you also download this OTL.exe tool to the flash drive also using a good computer.

After you have executed the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and have restarted the compromised computer copy the OTL.exe to the desktop of the computer and run it.

  • Download OTL to your Desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    c:\$recycle.bin\*.* /s

    /md5stop
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Ugh, sorry but it appears that we do not have the Windows disc, the system was pre-installed (I see now the certificate of authenticity on the tower itself).

I have been unable to locate the Repair Your Computer option in the f8 menu, and I'm not sure if I need a disc for the option to show up...

How shall I proceed?

User Profile corruption?
Log in as a different User.

Rename the problem profile to OldProfile. Log in as the original user again. A new profile will get created. If the crash is gone, copy over your user data from the corrupted one.

Yes, sorry.

I've not had any luck copying the user profile data. The enabler tool seems to be working fine, but I when click "OK" it thinks for a moment and then... nothing. Not sure what the problem is...
