Hi there,

As stated, my Windows 7 64-bit PC freezes randomly with a pink screen of death (never at the same length of time of PC being switched on or by any particular program) and I cannot figure out why. After a couple of hours searching online looking for similar cases, I felt it was time I posted my own message as the problem continues even after doing what has been suggested on other forums. At first, I was led to believe that it was a graphics card issue, so I dusted the card thinking it might be overheating. Then I backdated the Nvidia card drivers as there are known 'pink screen freeze' issues with the latest drivers. Other posts have suggested it may be a screen issue and others say hard drive. When I run my PC in Safe Mode with Networking (like I am currently) I never get the pink screen issue so I feel it is safe to assume this is not a screen or hard drive issue?

When I load up event viewer and go to system and go to the time of the screen freeze I see this Error:

Driver detected an internal error in its data structures for. Source - sptd

I do not have Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% installed which have been the most common cause for this error (from google searching). Also, I have done a disk check, a Norton Full Scan and a memory check and all is well. Some gamer friends have suggested that the graphics card is faulty and that I should replace it. Others have suggested to find a friend with a spare card and see if it continues, but unfortunately this is not an option for me. I hope that this is something simple at fault that can be fixed as I would rather not fork out cash for a new card and find that this problem continues.

Sorry for the rant! I hope that you can help. I have also attached a photo I took with my phone so you can see what my screen looks like.

Many thanks in advance for your help

Now -
For some idea of what we may be dealing with, please follow these instructions.
You could list the Make and Model of computer and post a snapshot with Speccy as this may give us a bit more to look at -
Publish a Snapshot using Speccy =<<Follow These Directions
Next -
Please download MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following boxes:

edit: Speccy does not seem to have copy pasted the correct link so I have attached the Speccy file to this post.

Ok, a friend and I built my machine in parts so there is no Make or Model. However, I believe its contents are listed below. If not I can answer anything that is missing. I ran both of these programs. The results are as follows.

Hey,

Just to give a quick update. I have scanned my windows, applications and cleaned registry using CCleaner and removed any of the unused items suggested. I also removed the sptd.sys as suggested (this being the most common cause of such errors. However, after all that and a number of restarts and I am still getting the pink screen of death. Be it when I am joining a game, or loading google chrome, or on desktop or testing mic livels...I have a feeling this is hardware...possible graphics card related now. The sptd error no longer exists.

Hello -
Please note that using the Registry Cleaner section of CCleaner can cause problems and can also remove good programs !!!
The only part of CCleaner that is advised is the Temp File cleaner and nothing more -

Please re run Speccy as per the directions linked, as yours is not correct. It should just look like a http link when posted. Not sure if this is related to your problem?

Also please Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

A quick look at your photo ""Looks like"" Power Supply Unit problem, but it also may not be -

Thank you -
EDITED for spelling -

I also removed the sptd.sys as suggested - The sptd error no longer exists.

May I ask if you actually edited the MiniToolBox report, or what were the items you say that you have "Removed" ??
If the report was edited it is only half good, and can I ask who said anything about removing anything, and was this done after the results??

This is what a sampled posted Speccy report looks like if the instructions are followed http://speccy.piriform.com/results/ON3BfqEcPmbMiIIejkcQpwk
Each report is individual in the code it leaves after http/speccy etc. results/xxxxxx

Hello, well I had a friend that had a similar freeze issue and he mentioned that running the CCleaner and then removing the SPTD solved it. However, this is not the case for me. No, I have not edited the MiniToolBox file or anything relating to it. Speccy is still giving me that strange html copy to clipboard option, so the best I can do is send the Results in a .txt form. I have also attached checkup.txt. I hope this is sufficient.

Hi - Some basics and a few updates are needed for now -

This error still shows as one of your later errors even if you have modified it >>
Error: (07/29/2012 00:33:31 PM) (Source: Service Control Manager) (User: )
Description: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: sptd

Some programs to update or alter >>
Java™ 6 Update 26
Java™ 6 Update 33
is now Version 7 update 5 (be sure to delete all older versions)
Click the Java icon in Control Panel > Second Tab is Update > and follow instructions -

Adobe Flash Player 10 is now up to Version 11.5
Adobe Reader 9 is now up to Version 10.1.3

Mozilla Firefox (3.0.6) is now very outdated Download for latest Firefox 14.0.1
EA Download Manager (Version: 7.3.6.1) could be removed while you have the problem and reinstalled again later -

Check that your Norton is fully updated
Download Malwarebytes Free may need to disable Norton (not remove) during download, and make sure you update it and run a Quick Scan - Then post the log back here
Also download SuperantiSpyware Free make sure it is updated and run a Quick Scan - Only post a log if it finds More than Tracking Cookies.

Try the FixIt referenced under Resolution at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2545227 .
Another option >>
Go into the Bios to the hardware monitor and leave it on that page, keep an eye on voltages and temperatures and leave it there.
If it shuts off there when no software has been loaded then it is for sure a hardware issue.
Stop and disable the Bonjour Service. This can always be restarted and enabled at a later time, but is needed for now -
How to Start or Disable Services in Windows 7:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2495-services-start-disable.html

Then run System File Checker. Start > Programs > Accessories > Right click on Command Prompt > Run as Admin > Type sfc /scannow > Click Enter
The sfc /scannow command (System File Checker) scans the integrity of all protected Windows 7 system files -

That will fill in some time for a starter, while I look at the rest -

I have noticed this. However, it says it during load and is not the cause of pink screen freeze.

Some programs to update or alter >>
Java™ 6 Update 26

I have updated Java. I cannot update it fully though via Safe Mode. Adobe Flash Player is built-in with Google Chrome. I removed Mozilla Firefox and EA Download Manager as they have not been used.

Check that your Norton is fully updated

Also download SuperantiSpyware Free make sure it is updated and run a Quick Scan - Only post a log if it finds More than Tracking Cookies.

My Norton is up-to-date and scans reveal no issues besides Tracking Cookies. The same goes for when I ran Malwarebytes and SuperantiSpyware.

Try the FixIt referenced under Resolution at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2545227 .
Another option >>

I downloaded this, but cannot run it in Safe Mode.

Stop and disable the Bonjour Service. This can always be restarted and enabled at a later time, but is needed for now -

Done.

Then run System File Checker. Start > Programs > Accessories > Right click on Command Prompt > Run as Admin > Type sfc /scannow > Click Enter
The sfc /scannow command (System File Checker) scans the integrity of all protected Windows 7 system files -

Done. Similar to other scans, nothing was found.

Go into the Bios to the hardware monitor and leave it on that page, keep an eye on voltages and temperatures and leave it there.
If it shuts off there when no software has been loaded then it is for sure a hardware issue.

I left this open for an hour or so and nothing changed. That along with being able to use Safe Mode without fail including today for a number of hours leads me to believe it is not a cpu/motherboard issue. However, graphics card overheating/failing is still possible and I believe this may be the issue. When I tried to load windows again to try and install latest Java, perform the Win Fix It etc it froze as soon as I opened my Downloads Folder. It seems to always freeze when I launch something - be it a folder, an Internet Browser or a Game or some kind of software. Now that sptd is removed there is no error in Event Viewer that goes alongside the crash which leads me to believe it is a hardware issue. However, my friend has pointed out that there are a number of key errors that show in Event Viewer when hardware fails.

Thanks for your help so far.

Hi again -
Would you be able to stay in Normal mode long enough to run a quick MiniToolBox just to bring up errors ??
Only tick - List last 10 Event Viewer Errors and List Devices Only Problems << Should have a Dot in the first circle -

This will bring up your latest errors and I hope may show a failing device as your Graphics card shows "warm" but not "Overheating"
Graphics - SAMSUNG (1360x768@60Hz) 1024MB GeForce GTX 280 (ASUStek Computer Inc) 51 °C Over 60C is usually Hot -

Thanks -

Name: SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio ?? Is there a problem with sound, or a second card installed ??
Description: SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio
This device is disabled. (Code 22)
Diagnosis
The device is disabled because a user disabled it by using Device Manager.
Resolution
On the Driver tab, Click Enable.

ALSO - Hardware device is often not recognized in windows 7 64 bit

If you click 'Enable' and it still does not work, try this
Run the tool on the Microsoft Fix it Center, "Hardware devices are not working or are not detected in Windows:"
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems/
Next -
Upgrade to CCleaner latest version and do not use it with any Registry Items checked. Only set it to clean Temp Files
Next -
Start > Type in > regedit - NOTE always have a Restore Point set prior to any Registry changes
Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\SetupCompleted
Check if its been set to "0", if so then set it to "1" (DWORD)
Next -
Constant Error - The content index catalog is corrupt. (HRESULT : 0xc0041801) (0xc0041801)
Follow these steps:
1. Click “Start.
2. Type “services.msc” in the Start search box and hit “Enter.”
3. Right-click “System Event Notification Service” and click “Properties.”
4. In the “Startup type” list, select “Manual.”
5. Click “Start” to start the service. Click “Apply” and click “OK.”
Next -
Not sure if you will be able to do this as Normal Mode is required CHECKDISK SCAN
Last Item -
As a final option - Some of these problems have been reported on Steam, with the idea to Uninstall the program Wait a while and Reinstall -

Try these as much as you can, and as usual, tell me if you can not do them -
