Hi,

Just wanted to know which of my hard drives is failing. When i start up my pc is get the following message:

sec master hard disk s.m.a.r.t. status bad backup and replace

The hard drive plugged into SATA 2 is my 1TB Samsung HD103SJ. I press F1 to continue and windows loads up fine. I opened WD data lifeguard tool since Seatools doesn't seem to work on my pc this a print screen of it:

I ran a quick test on drive 2 and this is what happened:

I ran the quick test on my other two drives and i got similar results:

So my question is apart from my Samsung drive which i know is failing , are my other two drives failing aswell because they don't complete the SMART quick test but their SMART status is pass.

Thanks in advance

Please publish a current Speccy report.

I was just looking at your previous topic where you did include a Speccy report:

977GB SAMSUNG SAMSUNG HD103SJ (SATA): 35 °C
977GB SAMSUNG SAMSUNG HD103SJ (SATA): 39 °C

You currently still have these two hard drives connected:

Everything looks fine ... except for this:

200 0xC8 Multi-Zone Error Rate

  • The count of errors found when writing a sector.
    The higher the value, the worse the disk's mechanical condition is.

See: S.M.A.R.T. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.
(Note: The hex value "10" converts to decimal 16.)

=================

RE: WDC WD5000AAKS-00YGA0 Serial Number: WD-WCAS80919663

197 0xC5 Current Pending Sector Count

  • Count of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors).
  • If an unstable sector is subsequently read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped.
  • Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later);
  • instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
198 0xC6 Uncorrectable Sector Count or Offline Uncorrectable or Off-Line Scan Uncorrectable Sector Count
  • The total count of uncorrectable errors when reading/writing a sector.
  • A rise in the value of this attribute indicates defects of the disk surface and/or problems in the mechanical subsystem.

See: S.M.A.R.T. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

Your luck with hard drives is remarkable! (remarkably bad!)

I take from the end of your last post that I'd be better off replacing all my drives then. Can anyone recommend some reliable ones?

That's a pretty good summary of the situation:
  • However, WDC WD5000AAKS-00YGA0 may be recoverable if some work is done on it, namely wipe it with dban, and then have another look at the situation.
Any of the major brands (eg. Seagate, Western Digital) is likely as good (or as bad, depending on your luck at the time) as another.
  • Aiming for reliability, I suggest using 500GB hard drives ONLY, and not pushing your luck by using larger capacity ones which don't seem to be as reliable or long-lasting.

Haven't got enough space for 6 500GB hard drives which is why i usually get 1TB ones. I've just bought a new 1TB Seagate HD so that'll replace the samsung one. Thanks for the advice anyway. I'll browse aria, ebuyer etc for some deals.
