Hello and thank you for your assistance!

I originally had a Security Platinum (rootkit zero access virus) Ran MBAM and a combo fix. But, my systems is still experiencing problems. I cannot launch IE8 and I cannot launch any programs by double clicking on icons from my desktop. I have to right click and select run or open. Redirects are continuing, but are being blocked by AVAST.

Thank you,

Jason

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/462723 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you should not bother creating a GMER log.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello jchill,

My name is Cody and I'll be helping you clean up your computer.

I will reply as soon as possible (typically within 24 hours).

Some points for you to keep in mind:

  • Do NOT run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

NOTE: When you post your reply, do not use the Posted Image button but use the Posted Image button instead.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the Posted Image button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planned. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

jchill,

I see you already have ComboFix installed on your computer, but you need to download the latest version. Please delete your copy and download a new one using the links below.

-------------------------------

We need to run a scan with Combofix:

  • Please go to the download page for ComboFix by sUBs.
  • Click the Download Now button pictured below and save the file to your desktop:

    Posted Image
  • Disable any anti-virus and/or firewall software you have installed.
instructions can be found here if needed
  • Close all open windows including your web browser
as mentioned in the first post, you may want to print out all instructions before starting
  • Double-click on the ComboFix icon on your desktop. Posted Image
  • Read the Disclaimer and click I Agree if you want to run the software, then you should see a window like the one below:

    Posted Image
  • DO NOT use your computer while ComboFix is running. There are a lot of things going on behind the scenes and a single mouse click can cause the program to stall.

However, if you see the prompt below, please click Yes to download the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

    Posted Image

If an Internet connection is not available or you choose not to install the recovery console, ComboFix will run in Reduced Functionality mode
  • Allow ComboFix to reboot the computer if necessary, it will run again after you log back in.
  • When complete, a log file will be displayed, please copy and paste the contents of this file into your next post.

    Posted Image

More information about downloading and using ComboFix can be found here if needed.

Hello jchill,

I will reply soon with where to go from here, but for now, how is the computer acting?

Are you still experiencing any symptoms of malware? If so, what are they?

Do you have any questions for me?

jchill,

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Folder::
C:\f2bd9771a3820c48b3c7ad
c:\documents and settings\Jason\Local Settings\Application Data\{A884A0BA-D414-11E1-8270-B8AC6F996F26}
c:\documents and settings\Jason\Local Settings\Application Data\{A8846FAA-D414-11E1-8270-B8AC6F996F26}
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\6F638BFE004DD153004A49167B07D287

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image
      icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

------------------------------------------------------

And as I said in my previous post...

How is the computer acting?

Are you still experiencing any symptoms of malware? If so, what are they?

Do you have any questions for me?

Shooter,

Thanks for the reply. Since running Combofix and Esetscan my computer is no longer experiencing redirects in Firefox! However, IE tries to launch and then closes. Office tools and documents saved to my C: will not open as well (Word, Excel...) Icons on desktop will only launch when right clicked.

Requested log reports are below...

Thanks again for the support.

Jason

Hello,

It's pretty much the same. No longer getting Google redirects. However, I cannot access IE or any of my Office programs of files, also cannot uninstall 2007.

Thanks for all the help,

Jason

Hello jchill,

Are experiencing these problems in Safe Mode With Networking?

How to Access Safe Mode With Networking

While the computer is turning on, tap F8 repeatedly until a black screen with white text appears. Using your arrow keys highlight the option Safe Mode With Networking and hit Enter.

----------------------------------------

We need to run the SFC /SCANNOW Command

The sfc /scannow command (System File Checker) scans the integrity of all protected Windows system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed/modified, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible.

Note: Be aware that if you have modified your system files as in theming explorer/system files, running sfc /scannow will revert the system files such as explorer.exe back to it's default state.

Note: Make the appropriate backups of your system files that you have modified for theming if you wish to save them before running sfc /scannow.

For Windows XP:

  • Click the Start button.
  • Click Run.
  • Type cmd.

Next:

  • Copy the following line of text and paste it into the black box.
(right-click in the black box and choose paste)

    sfc /scannow
  • Press Enter to run the command.
Note: This may take a while to finish.
  • If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command 3 or more times to completely fix everything that it's able to.

Retrieving SFC /scannow log

For Windows XP:

  • Click the Start button
  • Click Run
  • Type cmd
  • Press enter

Next:

  • Copy the following line of text and paste it into the black box.
(right-click in the black box and choose paste)

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >> "%userprofile%\desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
  • Press Enter to run the command.
  • A text file sfcdetails.txt should appear on your desktop. Post the content of the file in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------

Also...

What exactly do you mean by you "cannot access IE or any Office programs or files."

IE simply won't launch? It launches but you don't have internet access?

Please describe both problems (IE and Office related) in detail in your next post.

Thank you for the continued support,

IE will not open. When I click on the IE icon or rick click, nothing happens... it won't open or launch. Office 2007 programs and files will not open. I cannot not open any docs from my "My Documents" files. I tried to unistall Office 2007, but receive error "unistall not complete"

I'll check Safe Mode and SFC/SCANNOW first thing in the morning

Regards,

Jason

Hello Shooter,

I tried accessing IE and Office in Safe Mode with no success. Also, when I try to run SFC /SCANNOW I receive the following error "Files that are required for Win to run properly..." I'm being asked to insert Windows XP Service Pack 3 CD, which I do not have. Do I need to order the CD?

Thank again,

Jason
