Good Afternoon.

I was once able to print from laptop but for more than a year now I have not been able to. Attempt 3 to resolve this has failed, thus bringing me to you wonderful people.

SYSTEM
Dell Vostro 1000
AmD Athlon 64x2
XP Home Edition vs. 2002, Service pack 3

Wireless connection to Linksys WRT150N. Usual use approx. 200 ft from router. Internet service = Cable.

Printer is USB connected to Host PC
Printer sharing is ON (host) OFF on others
Windows Firewall is ON, sharing is checked under exceptions tab

Network PCs are unable to see each other. Cannot find shared files/folders from Host PC on my laptop and vice versa.

Based on what I have been reading, my instincts tell me the fix is simple. Unfortunately, I am unable to find the problem. Leaning towards a setting in the Router, but that stuff is very greek to me. Not sure what to change. Please help...much appreciated.

NOTE: some of the error msgs occurred while resolving a rogue problem.

Are you able to ping each other's IP?

Thanks Carlos! Your help is greatly appreciated.

PINGING
Desktop to Laptop
laptop name returned "could not find host name" (MLAPTOP)
IP address returned "request timed out" (195.168.2.102)

Ping to 192.168.2.1 & 192.168.2.100 - 4 sent/received (OK)
Loopback 127.0.0.1 - 4 sent/received (OK)

Laptop to Desktop
192.168.2.1 - 4 sent, 4 received
by name MINX-OFFICE returned "could not find host name"
192.168.2.100 4 sent, 3 received, 1 lost

QUESTION
Can IP and MAC addresses change from one day to the next?
I use MAC filtering and the client list 2 days ago showed the laptop's IP address as 192.168.2.107 --->today it is xxx.xxx.x.102
The table shows a couple of MAC addresses that I don't know who they belong to. Could they be old host addresses if indeed the address can change from one day to the next?
The table did not list the desktop today, so I added it and the table did return the correct client name. It assigned IP address as 192.168.2.100, whereas old notes I had indicated the address was xxx.xxx.2.101

A bit confused on these findings. Please advise. Thanks

Looks like from the Desktop to laptop you are having issues. Disable firewall on Laptop and try to ping from Desktop again. See if this improves communication btw the two. Also if you have on your network settings not to allow ping requests then the laptop will never reply so make sure "allow incoming echo request" is enabled. I would suggest turning off firewall on both machines while you are troubleshooting. You also mentioned MAC Filtering? Disable that too for now. Make sure Printer is "Shared"

"allow incoming echo request" was already checked

Findings with Windows Firewall and MAC Filtering off. (Router firewall still enabled)

Neither pc could find the other by NAME

Pinging by IP address worked. 4 sent, 4 received

STILL unable to print from laptop (Canon i860). Printer sharing is checked on desktop. OFF on laptop.
STILL unable to find shared files on desktop from the laptop.

Same results with Router Firewall Disabled.

OK, so now you can ping it.
Go to start>RUN
type in: \\host-ip
Replace "host-ip" with the PC IP where the USB printer is attached.
ex: \\192.168.2.102

Do you see the printer being shared there?

I am at a loss at this point. Prior to starting this post I had been researching how to find the IP address for a printer (or my specific printer). I got no where on that. The printer does not have a tag. The manual is no help and the "test print" page does not provide anything either.

I tried to ping the printer by name which failed. Either I'm doing the ping command wrong or am using the wrong name. I tried Canoni860, Canon and Canon i860. (results "unable to locate)

At that point I chose to uninstall the printer and reinstall to see if that changed anything and ran into other problems.

I got a stop error blue screen after two attempts trying to get the disc to run. (drive malfunctioning). Tried to start disc through run command and then got the blue screen. Have rebooted several times to no avail. Have not tried to use Windows auto wizard that comes up due to system recognizing "new hardware".

Apparently it is a driver causing the problem. Is it because the printer driver was uninstalled or is the CD driver causing problems?? The system apparently recovered from "a serious error". I still cannot get the disc to read, yet when first inserted it sounds like it is attempting to do so.

Will try a reboot with printer unplugged to see if that changes anything in trying to get the disc to read. (doubtful) Windows Update does not have any hardware, BIOS or driver recommendations for my system. Am also installing all recommended non-critical updates for XP. Critical updates are current.

Any insight you can provide would be great so we can proceed with the printer connectivity issue. Without getting the printer reinstalled, we are at a stand still. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Any particular reason why we are not proceeding here?
If the issue at hand now needs to be in a different forum can you please move it so it CAN be addressed?

Don't mean to sound nasty, if I do, but I am having problem after problem now since uninstalling the printer.

Was unable to read the drive. Fixed that supposedly but it is not working properly yet. Running slow and sluggish.
When trying to reinstall the printer software received the following error messages:

Error copying file or folder
Cannot create or replace HTML: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Start Htm
The installation was cancelled or has failed.

RJ Raster Printer Driver Installer
has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Help. Someone please help.

I ran Complete Internet Repair with all boxes checked as suggested.
Why was this suggested? Why did it wipe out some features/icons in the notifications area?
I'm not so sure I like the idea of restoring some features back to defaults? (ie: firewall settings)

How was this tool supposed to fix my DVD RW drive? It didn't.

Still cannot run my printer's CD in order to get back to diagnosing the original problem as posted.

Hello, you should download the driver from the website instead of trying to use the CD. It would be much quicker.
Also you mentioned before about the issue when you can not communicate by using the PC names.
if you take a look at your config you can tell the this feature is turned off: NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled

you should enable it.
