Why is that IE will sometimes close by itself? It's only happened a couple of times since I bought my new computer about two months ago. It just happened for the second time and I definitely didn't click on the 'x' to close the window. Anyone have an explanation?

You may have a browser hijack or other malware trying to start a web page. Go to Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>(uncheck) Enable Install on Demand [Internet Explorer] & Enable Install on Demand [other]
Make sure both of these are OFF by unchecking the box. By default they are checked.

Okay. I unchecked Enable Install on Demand (other). Enable Install on Demand (Internet Explorer) was already unchecked.

I've scanned with Norton anti-virus...nothing was found. I'm going to install some other anti spyware programs tonight. I've never tried any of the online scans...guess i'll do that too.

Oh, when I'm downloading the programs, do I click 'open' or 'save'?

I tried to download Ad-Aware but it didn't seem to work...

After I clicked 'Download', there was just a message that said, "Thank you for downloading Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition 1.06", but it didn't actually download, at least I didn't it did. Same thing happened with Spybot.

Thanks for the links...

I finally managed to download Spybot and Ad-aware. I disabled Yahoo pop-up blocker...I dunno if that helped or not.

When did Ad-aware become trial only?

Spybot didn't find anything. Ad-Aware found dozens of cookies. Yahoo Anti-Spy found even more cookies. But nothing malicious I guess. So I still dunno what causes IE to close. I'll probably download some of the other anti spyware programs when I have more time.

I have seen that happen when IE comes across a page it cannot render.
Frequently it's a java issue. Do you have the latest version of java installed?
Since it seems to be extremely rare that this happens to you, i'm thinking you just came across a page that's giving IE a fit.
Easiest way to test this would be trying a different browser at the same page causing the problem.
Since Firefox will sometimes choke on the same pages as IE, I'd try it with Opera.
Version 9 beta2 works well and no annoying adds.

Ad-aware SE is still free. You can download it from here. Uninstall the version you have first though.
As with everything else, install the updates immediately after you install the program.

Actually, I did get a Java update reminder just the other day. But I can't remember if I downloaded it or not. The reminder icon isn't there anymore.

This computer has a Netscape browser, but I always use IE.

I can't remember what page(s) I was on when IE closed. I only visit a select few pages on the web, mostly email and messageboards.
