The programme ReImage (www.reimageplus.com) which I have used to try to address stability problems with my PC, reports that it is infected with Trojan.Backdoor.gen.a. Unfortunately it is unable to remove it. The trojan is not being detected or removed either by my installed antivirus program Kaspersky Internet Security, by Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, by SuperAntiSpyware, or by the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool.

I am experiencing some of the characterstics infection with this trojan, notably inability to run Windows updates. My attempts to re-register BITS files and Windows update files manually via the command line have mostly failed. giving rise to 'failed to load' error messages, or else 'error code 802070005' or 'error code 80004005'. Also I am continuing to experience BSOD on a regular basis. (I did have a memory fault, but I have rectified this by installing new memory.)

I look forward very much to hearing from you ...

I meant to say that I was not able to run GMER in the manner specified. All the boxes except Services, Registry, Files and ADS are greyed out and hence unavailable as options.

I further discover that my 'Turn Windows features on or off' box is persistently blank, and that I am unable to run sfc /scannow - my administrator privileges are not recognised. While I appear as an administrator under user accounts, my account type appears as that of a standard user, and I cannot change it; the relevant control is greyed out.

:-(

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/462040 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you should not bother creating a GMER log.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Dear Bleeping Computer

I still need your help!!

I have Windows Professional 64-bit, which would explain my previous inability to create a GMER log. I have been unable to install SP1.

NB since my previous post I have run Panda A/V, which claims to have detected and resolved 17 infections, including two trojans, neither of which was Trojan.Backdoor.gen.a. My 'normal' A/V is Kaspersky Internet Security.

New DDS log below as requested. A new attach.zip file is attached.

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium installation disc with the Professional upgrade key.

Regards

Catherine

Hello CatherineE,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If Cure is not an option, Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

2.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Dear Fireman4it

Thank you very much for contacting me.

I have followed the processes you prescribed. I didn't see any obvious indications of the presence of malware from running TDSSKiller and ComboFix. Please find attached log files as requested for these programs.

Unfortunately Windows updates will STILL not install!! I get the same error message as before.

Regards

CatherineE

1· Download the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (64 bits)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=914fbc5b-1fba-4bae-a7c3-d2c47c6fcffc

2. Click Download, and then Open when prompted.

3. Once the download completes click OK on the Windows Update Standalone Installer notification.

4. You will see The updates are being installed with a progress bar – do not cancel this process.

5. You will receive an onscreen notification saying that the update has been successfully installed.

6. The results of this tool are output to a log file stored on your computer which you will need to retrieve.

7. Please click Start, click Computer, click Local Disk (C:) or whichever drive Windows is installed to.

8. Then click on the Windows folder, click on the Logs folder, and click on the CBS folder.

9. Within the CBS folder open the CheckSUR log file.

10. Copy the contents of this file, and paste it into your reply.

Able to install it now? IF not please indicate which update it is. Also the exact error message.

Dear Fireman4it

I have successfully installed the Windows System Update Readiness tool. However the file checksur.log it generated is too large (3,512 KB) to include in a post or to attach. I tried compressing it using WinZip, but it seems that .zip and .zipx files are not allowed on the forum. How should I send this to you, please?

Regards

CatherineE

Dear Fireman4it

No, unfortunately - I am getting the same error message as before - code 80070002.

The checksur.log reports that all the updates I should have had are missing. Reimage would normally have reinstalled updates as the concluding part of its repair process, but was unable to do so.

Regards

CatherineE
